“Sweet Home” has been receiving divided responses ever since the release of Season 2
Netflix’s series “Sweet Home Season 2”, which was released globally on December 1st, depicts a world where humans with desires become monsters centering on Cha Hyun-soo (Song Kang), a Green Home survivor and a special infectious case who can go back and forth between monster and human forms, and his struggles when facing new beings and mysterious phenomena in a new place.
Webtoon-based drama “Sweet Home Season 1” was released in 2020 and gained huge love from drama fans around the world. It became the first Korean content to enter Top 10 Series in the US. Therefore, director Lee Eung-bok continued taking the megaphone for Season 2. Season 1 cast, including Song Kang, Lee Jin-wook, Lee Si-young, Go Min-si, Park Gyu-young, is now joined by Jinyoung, Yoo Oh-sung, Oh Jung-se, and Kim Moo-yeol.
Receiving positive reviews for introducing the K-Creature genre in Season 1, “Sweet Home” eventually faced criticism in the new season. Despite waiting for a long time and showing high expectations, viewers eventually expressed regrets and disappointment.
If Season 1 centers on the residents struggling to fight monsters inside Green Home apartment, Season 2, with a greater scale, unfolds the outside world with a bigger fear of not knowing who will become a monster as well as when and how the transformation takes place. While heading to their new home, a stadium, Green Home survivors meet a large number of new characters along with an army unit dedicated to handling monsters. The content continues to tell about various sides of humans, including humans who are even more monstrous than monsters.
However, many people commented that they couldn’t sympathize with the stories since there were too many developments with various characters, including Hyun-soo, Green Home residents and the new faces. As the screen time for the main character Hyun-soo and Green Home people, who led Season 1, was reduced, viewers’s immersion in the story also decreased significantly.
Portraying an expanded worldview with the emergence of new characters, the drama inevitably needed time to draw a big sketch. Nevertheless, some viewers considered Season 2 a trailer for the next seasons as it left too many unsolved hints. Some wonder if it might have been better to divide “Sweet Home” into two parts like “The Glory” instead of this seasonal format.
After “Sweet Home 2” was released, director Lee Eung-bok confessed, “Season 2 was supposed to have 9 episodes but it got shortened. VFX processing took a long time. Since there were so many characters, we had to create stories for the actors to appear. That’s why I had no choice but to move episode 9 to the next season and ended Season 2 in the 8th episode”.
He continued, “All the questions will be answered in Season 3”, adding “Many characters will meet in Season 3. Every episode is interesting as the knots and conflicts in Season 2 will be resolved and familiar characters reunite”.
Meanwhile, “Sweet Home 2” ranked 4th in Netflix’s Global Top 10 TV Series (non-English) by attracting a total of 23.7 million viewers within three days (Dec 1st – Dec 3rd). Although Seasons 2 and 3 were filmed at the same time, Season 3 will premiere in summer next year. Attention is focused on whether “Sweet Home 3” will answer all the curiosities perfectly and reverse viewers’ reactions.
