Idol-Turned Actress Too Pretty She Was Offered Street Casting While Shooting a Reality Show in Japan

Actress Jung Soo-jung, also known as f(x)’s Krystal, had a famous behind-the-scenes casting story

During the filming of MBC every1’s documentary reality show “f(x) Koala” in 2010, when Krystal was only 16, she visited Japan with f(x) members for a mission where they had to separate and walk through Harajuku Street. While walking alone, a quiet Japanese man approached Krystal. She thought he might be a fan of f(x).

Expecting a friendly greeting, Krystal was taken aback when the man handed her his business card, introducing himself as a casting manager from an agency. In response, Krystal was surprised and quickly said, “I’m Korean!” and hastily left. Her elegant visuals caught the attention of the locals in Japan.

With her graceful beauty, Krystal later shifted her focus from idol to acting activities, proving her talent in TV dramas and then making a remarkable transition to the big screen.

She gained recognition in various short films, including one produced by SM in 2012, and made her feature film debut in the 2017 film “Unexpected Love,” starring alongside EXO’s Lay.

Krystal’s domestic feature film debut was in the independent film “More Than Family.” From then on, she continued her acting activities under the name Jung Soo-jung.

“More Than Family” depicts the unconventional story of a pregnant woman of five months, searching for her estranged father and the potential father of her unborn child after her parents’ divorce 15 years ago.

Through her bold portrayal of a pregnant woman and delightful depiction of traditional family values, Jung Soo-jung garnered praise for her versatile acting skills. Demonstrating a consistent ability to lead a film with flexibility, she showcased the potential to evolve as a leading actress.

Continuing this momentum, she took on a leading role in Netflix’s original film “Sweet & Sour,” co-starring with Jang Ki-yong and Chae Soo-bin, solidifying her position as a significant presence in the film industry.

In 2023, she was cast in her most successful film to date, “Cobweb.” Playing Han Yoo-rim, she engages in a mysterious ‘bad romance’ with her co-star, rising actor Kang Ho-se (Oh Jung-se).

Jung Soo-jung’s portrayal of Han Yoo-rim, seamlessly presenting the natural acting and vocalization of a 1970s actress while gradually revealing various emotions over time, earned acclaim from critics and audiences alike.

Following her appearance in “Cobweb,” where co-stars Oh Jung-se and Jeon Yeo-been received awards, many expressed disappointment that Jung Soo-jung did not receive an award.

However, on Dec 7th at the 28th Chunsa International Film Festival, Jung Soo-jung won Best Supporting Actress. With this first-ever film festival win, attention is now focused on whether she can sustain her position as a star in the Korean film industry.
