YG’s IT Boy GD and IT Girl Jennie Embark On New Solo Journey Under Another Agency

BIGBANG’s G-Dragon and BLACKPINK’s Jennie will each open the second act of their music career under a new company

On December 24th, Jennie officially announced that she had established her own independent label “ODD ATELIER.”

Jennie is a K-pop artist who represents the third generation idols. Debuting in 2016 as a member of YG Entertainment’s four-member girl group BLACKPINK, Jennie has received much love from K-pop fans with hits such as “Boombaya,” “Whistle,” “Ddu-du Ddu-du,” and “Pink Venom.” With solid rap, vocal, and dance skills, she has also proven her powerful influence as a solo artist. Her solo song “SOLO” released in 2018 was a huge hit.

As her seven-year exclusive contract with YG Entertainment has expired this year, the idol has chosen to become a solo artist under another agency and will continue to accompany YG Entertainment only for “group activities.” Earlier, YG Entertainment announced the renewal of Jennie’s contract along with BLACKPINK on December 6th.

Meanwhile, G-Dragon has left YG Entertainment and started his new chapter in Galaxy Corporation. Director Cho Seong-hae of the Galaxy Corporation officially announced at a press conference held at JW Marriott Hotel in Banpo-dong, Seoul on December 21st that he has signed an exclusive contract with G-Dragon.

Director Cho said, “Kwon Ji-yong (G-Dragon) and Galaxy Corporation will go beyond the simple relationship of the agency and challenge ourselves with what has not been done or has not been able to be done with our partnership.”

G-Dragon is one of YG Entertainment’s biggest stars. He made his debut in 2006 as the leader of YG Entertainment’s five-member boy group BIGBANG. He has produced numerous hit songs including “Lie,” “Last Goodbye,” “Haru Haru” and “Fantastic Baby.” Having distinguished himself as a solo artist, G-Dragon has stood out as an icon representing the 21st century’s pop culture, with outstanding singing and dancing, excellent lyric writing and composition skills, and extraordinary fashion sense.

G-Dragon has been in YG Entertainment for 16 years since his debut. Including his trainee years, G-Dragon has been with YG Entertainment for more than 20 years. Now that G-Dragon has joined hands with Galaxy Corporation to officially start a new chapter, he showed his gratitude to YG Entertainment.

“I was able to have such a meaningful start with my new companion Galaxy Corporation because of YG, which made me who I am today,” he said in a handwritten letter. “The numerous results I gained through the long time of my life as a trainee and over 20 years as a solo artist were possible because I was with all my family members at YG. I will keep this in my heart for the rest of my life.”

K-pop fans who support G-Dragon and Jennie, who have grown from YG Entertainment trainees to global K-pop stars, are focusing their attention on how the two will herald a new start in their new agencies.
