A growing number of stars are apologizing for various reasons
These apologies stem from incidents such as being asked to pay for parking by their former agency, claiming not to know what kalguksu (Korean noodle soup) is, or allegedly disregarding a senior’s favor.
Super Junior Kyuhyun, who moved from SM Entertainment to Antenna after 18 years, expressed his frustration about being told to pay for parking after switching agencies.
Despite being a light remark made on a variety show, this led to online debates about the appropriateness of asking a former artist to pay for parking. Kyuhyun later clarified that it was a joking comment but felt the need to apologize due to the controversy.
Another instance involves NewJeans Minji. Previously, Minji faced baseless speculation after a video from a live broadcast last year, where she said “What is kalguksu?“, spread through various SNS. Therefore, Minji expressed frustration in a recent live broadcast, “Do you think I don’t know the meaning of kalguksu? I know how many types of kalguksu there are, what goes into it, and what materials it’s made from.”
However, this video sparked discussions again, bringing the “NewJeans Minji kalguksu incident” back into the spotlight. Minji apologized for her attitude, acknowledging that her behavior may have made fans uncomfortable.
Rapper Lee Young-ji apologized after speculations that she ignored the goodwill of her senior, SEVENTEEN DK. On Jan 1st, Lee Young-ji had posted a captured image of a netizen pretending to be SEVENTEEN DK on her SNS along with a message sent by the real DK. In the message, DK said, “Young-ji, let’s receive a lot of blessings for the new year! You’ve worked so hard this past year. It must have been a valuable year for you. I always support you, so I hope you soar even higher in 2024. Take care of your health and eat well.”
Lee Young-ji replied to DK’s message with an embarrassed tone, saying, “Ah sunbae-nim!!!!” This followed a series of long-standing jokes between DK and Lee Young-ji, as DK often sends long messages which “burdened” Lee Young-ji, who never knows how to respond.
In particular, when DK appeared on Lee Young-ji’s YouTube show “My Alcohol Diary”, Lee Young-ji mentioned that she often received long messages from DK, and felt pressured to respond with a reply of similar length. This same joke was also mentioned when Lee Young-ji performed together with DK on the 2023 AAA.
These stars, though not involved in legal or socially disruptive actions, found themselves apologizing or clarifying due to ongoing speculations and misunderstandings. The current societal atmosphere tends to amplify even minor mistakes, leading to a cautious approach to public statements to avoid unintended consequences. The sensitivity and potential for severe reactions in today’s society raise concerns about an overly vigilant and judgmental environment.
