Netflix’s latest series, “When Life Gives You Tangerines,” directed by Kim Won-seok, is a masterful blend of humor and heartfelt emotions. With only four episodes released, it has already captured audiences with its beautifully woven narrative and immersive storytelling – much like the vibrant scent of Jeju’s canola flowers in full bloom.

The drama follows Ae-soon (IU), a spirited and rebellious young woman born in Jeju, and Gwan-sik (Park Bo-gum), a steadfast and devoted man who never wavers in his feelings for her. Written by Im Sang-choon (writer of “When the Camellia Blooms”) and helmed by Kim Won-seok (director of “My Mister,” “Misaeng”), the series artfully balances lighthearted moments with deep emotional resonance, making every scene feel both poignant and relatable.
Im Sang-choon’s signature writing style shines through, crafting a story where each character’s ambitions and struggles naturally drive the plot forward. Without relying on traditional antagonists, the drama instead draws tension and warmth from the complexities of human relationships, offering viewers a deeply moving and healing experience.

Gwan-sik’s character, in particular, stands out as a compelling male lead. His unwavering love for Ae-soon, combined with his quiet strength and reliability, makes him an irresistible presence on screen. As Ae-soon fights to carve out her own path, Gwan-sik remains her unshakable support, creating a love story that is as enduring as it is touching.
Director Kim Won-seok’s attention to detail further enhances the series, capturing the breathtaking landscapes of Jeju’s changing seasons while enriching the emotional depth of Ae-soon and Gwan-sik’s journey. The cinematography invites viewers into their world, making every moment feel raw and intimate.

IU seamlessly transforms into Ae-soon, embodying the essence of “yomangjida” – a Jeju term for someone who is sharp, lively, and full of mischief. Meanwhile, Park Bo-gum brings Gwan-sik to life with his gentle yet profound expressions, making his character’s love and devotion all the more palpable. His natural warmth adds even greater depth to Gwan-sik’s steadfast nature.
Beyond the two leads, the supporting cast adds richness to the story. Yeom Hye-ran delivers an unforgettable performance as Ae-soon’s mother despite her brief screen time, while Oh Min-ae balances her role as Gwan-sik’s mother with just the right mix of sternness and depth. The trio of Jeju’s legendary female divers, or “haenyeo,” injects both humor and heart into the narrative.

With new episodes dropping in four-episode batches each week, “When Life Gives You Tangerines” is already proving to be a drama worth watching – one that lingers in the heart long after the credits roll.
