There are stark differences between BABYMONSTER’s lacking debut promotions and BLACKPINK’s grand entrance
On November 27, BABYMONSTER made their official debut with the release of digital single “Batter Up” and its MV. Prior to the MV and song release, YG has unleashed visual posters and films of the current 6 members, which showcase their charisma and appearances.
However, the lacking promotion, investment, and strategy related to BABYMONSTER’s debut has left the audience greatly disappointed.
In particular, despite receiving huge attention as YG’s first girl group after BLACKPINK, BABYMONSTER’s concept and images seems to be greatly bland and underinvested. The group only had one basic concept for everything: from the posters, visual films, teasers, to the “Batter Up” MV.
Adding to this, on Blind, a forum for office workers in Korea, where employees have to verify their account with work emails, a YG staff member revealed that BABYMONSTER’s MV has no art director.
Naturally, this leads to a lacking concept for the YG girl group, which is being said to be overshadowed by even girl groups from small companies. Some fans also express their frustration, comparing the MV to low-budget music videos from the early 2010s.
Furthermore, despite taking an extremely long time to debut, BABYMONSTER only released 1 digital single with no physical album. They also hold no debut showcase, and the promotional period is not expected to last long.
Meanwhile, back in 2016, BLACKPINK debuted with two explosive songs “Boombayah” and “Whistle,” quickly proving themselves as formidable rookies. Both songs also boast impressive MVs, with expensive settings, eye-catching cinematography and special effects, and fashionable outfits.
Moreover, prior to their official debut, there were various photo concepts released for BLACKPINK, ranging from hip-hop style, preppy girl crush, to soft and natural, exuding chicness and luxury.
The group also promoted their single album, “Square One” for almost a month.
As can be seen, there’s a world of difference between BLACKPINK’s and BABYMONSTER’s debut promotions and concepts, rousing concerns for the fate of BABYMONSTER, especially amid the extremely competitive industry nowadays.
