Rosé, G-Dragon & Choa: Stars Who Express Concerns Over Mental Heath of Celebrities

There’s a growing concern regarding the mental health of stars suffering hardships due to malicious comments

Recent news of idols suspending activities due to health issues has caused great regrets. Apart from injuries, symptoms of anxiety and stress have been increasingly mentioned as the cause of idols’ hiatuses. Therefore, senior singers, such as G-Dragon, BLACKPINK’s Rosé, and former AOA member Choa, have expressed concerns regarding the future of K-pop, emphasizing the importance of advice and care for the mental health of junior idols.

At the press conference of a variety show on November 28th, Choa confessed that she wanted to give advice to junior singers. The former AOA member said, “Many of the K-pop friends I know are enduring stress with the help of medication”.

She shared, “While thinking about how to keep doing this job, I met some seniors and those sisters are the living witnesses as they helped me continue doing activities. I also want to be a person like that to younger junior singers. I know many friends are struggling with mental problems, and I hope they don’t feel too pressured and can continue working happily and staying mentally healthy”.

Choa debuted as an AOA member in 2012 and the group gained huge love after releasing hit songs such as “Short Hair”, “Miniskirt” and “Like a Cat”. Along with AOA activities, Choa also delivered her positive energy through various entertainment programs. However, she took a break after suffering from suspicions and rumors and has resumed activities.

BLACKPINK’s Rosé also mentioned the mental health issues of junior idols when she attended the Mental Health Discussion for the spouses of leaders participating in the APEC Summit organized by US First Lady Jill Biden. The female singer said, “I do feel like some of the things I do is just never enough, and no matter how hard I work on something, there’s always gonna be somebody who has their own opinion or who enjoy taking control of the narrative”, adding “Just as we feed ourselves for better health and fitness, mental health can only be maintained equally – if not more intentionally – as our physical well being.”

In particular, Rosé pointed out that SNS made her feel vulnerable, particularly when people are critical, and emphasized the importance of mental health. Mrs. Jill Biden also agreed, saying “We never, ever spoke about mental health. There was shame attached to it. But I think we should be more open to heal each other’s heart.”

G-Dragon was recently accused of taking drugs but he denied all the allegations. As soon as the suspicion broke out, the male singer voluntarily attended the police investigation and tested negative in all kinds of drug tests. As a result, the travel ban on him has been lifted, and G-Dragon also gave a warning that he would respond strongly to defamation and sexual harassment.

When asked, “Emptiness or stress are reasons why some celebrities ended up taking drugs, but it didn’t apply to you?”, in a recent interview, G-Dragon said, “I don’t know how people usually think about the image of a celebrity, but in my opinion, it’s not like that. We always have to find our own ways to relieve emptiness and stress. I found mine, too. However, it should never be drugs.”
