Career

The Path to YG: Pre-Debut Journey

Ahyeon’s journey into the demanding world of K-pop training began years before BABYMONSTER’s public reveal. Her affinity for performance manifested early, with a love for dancing sparked at the young age of five, an interest nurtured by her supportive father.

Her formal path towards becoming an idol under YG Entertainment commenced when she successfully passed auditions. She was accepted into the agency’s rigorous training program in December 2018, having cleared the initial audition round in February of that year. Her audition piece was reportedly “The Show” by Lenka. Ahyeon dedicated four years to honing her skills within YG’s training system before facing the final evaluations.

Public anticipation began building when YG Entertainment officially introduced Ahyeon as the second potential member of BABYMONSTER on January 16, 2023. Her talents were further showcased in the YouTube reality series Last Evaluation, which documented the final assessment process for the trainee lineup. This platform allowed viewers to witness her capabilities, including a notable cover performance of BLACKPINK Rosé’s solo track “Gone,” performed alongside fellow trainees Ruka and Pharita.

In the introduction video for BABYMONSTER, Ahyeon made her long-awaited introduction to the public, receiving much attention from them. In her vocal class, Jung Ahyeon managed to showcase her unique vocal texture with thickness and perfect pronunciation.

The culmination of this evaluation process saw Ahyeon ranked first among the seven trainees. This top ranking served as a significant endorsement of her perceived skills and readiness for debut by the agency. Such a distinction, however, inevitably placed immense pressure and expectation upon her shoulders, establishing her as the anticipated “ace” of the group even before their official launch.

A Pause Before the Spotlight: Health Hiatus and Debut Absence

Despite the high expectations following her top ranking in Last Evaluation, Ahyeon’s journey hit an unexpected pause just weeks before BABYMONSTER’s planned debut. In mid-November 2023, reports emerged suggesting she would not be part of the group’s launch. YG Entertainment subsequently confirmed her absence, officially citing health reasons and stating she would focus on rest and recovery.

The communication surrounding her hiatus was complex. Initial confirmations seemed to align with departure reports, but the agency quickly clarified the situation, emphasizing health concerns. This sequence of events could reflect various factors, including genuine fluctuations in her health, strategic public relations management, or internal adjustments. Notably, online discussions around this time also referenced a pre-debut controversy concerning Ahyeon’s use of a racial slur while covering a song during a school performance , although YG’s official reason for her hiatus remained solely health-related.

As a result, BABYMONSTER proceeded with their debut as a six-member group, releasing the digital single “Batter Up” on November 27, 2023, without Ahyeon’s participation. Even in early 2024, YG founder Yang Hyun-suk acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding her exact return date, while reassuring fans she remained part of the group.

Joining the Monster Roster: Official Debut with BABYMONS7ER

Ahyeon officially joined BABYMONSTER’s activities on April 1, 2024, a date strategically aligned with the release of their debut EP, BABYMONS7ER. This date was positioned by YG as the group’s formal debut as a complete seven-member unit.

Crucially, YG Entertainment committed to re-recording the group’s initial two singles, “Batter Up” and “Stuck in the Middle,” to include Ahyeon’s vocals. The BABYMONS7ER EP subsequently featured these “7 version” tracks, alongside new material. This decision was significant; it ensured Ahyeon’s participation in the group’s foundational songs, presenting a unified OT7 identity from their official EP launch and integrating the pre-hiatus singles into the complete group’s discography, effectively resetting the narrative after her absence.

Since rejoining the group, Ahyeon has participated in key releases, solidifying her presence:

  • Extended Play: BABYMONS7ER (April 1, 2024). The EP set a record for the highest first-week sales for a K-pop girl group debut album at the time.
  • Lead Single: “Sheesh” (April 1, 2024). The music video achieved significant milestones, including reaching 100 million YouTube views in just 10 days, the fastest for a K-pop girl group debut track.
  • Digital Single: “Forever” (July 1, 2024).
  • Studio Album: DRIP (November 1, 2024). The album charted on the U.S. Billboard 200.

The Centerpiece: Ahyeon’s Role and Talents

Ahyeon is widely recognized as a core member of BABYMONSTER, often described as an “all-rounder” or “ace” due to her proficiency across multiple disciplines. This assessment is echoed by YG’s own descriptions, with the founder referring to her as a “warrior that has many weapons”.

Her perceived and designated roles within the group include:

  • Center: Frequently cited as the group’s center, a position reflecting stage presence and focus during performances.
  • Vocalist: Possesses strong vocal abilities, noted for her range, power, and emotional delivery. She is often considered a main or lead vocalist alongside Rami. Her pre-debut cover of Charlie Puth’s “Dangerously” garnered significant attention online.
  • Rapper: Demonstrates rapping skills and is typically positioned as a lead or sub-rapper within the group’s structure.
  • Dancer: Recognized for her dancing capabilities, energy, and expressive stage presence since pre-debut evaluations. Her early passion for dance began at age five , and YG highlighted her rapid learning curve in this area.

Beyond performance skills, Ahyeon possesses significant linguistic abilities. She is fluent in her native Korean, as well as English and Mandarin Chinese. Having started learning English at age five and Chinese at age seven , her trilingualism is a considerable asset.

This combination of being an “all-rounder” performer and a polyglot makes Ahyeon strategically invaluable for YG Entertainment.

Personal Life

Early Life

Born in Chuncheon, South Korea , Ahyeon pursued her artistic inclinations formally by attending the prestigious Hanlim Multi Art School in Seoul. She enrolled in the Department of Applied Music (Class 1-6), where fellow BABYMONSTER member Rami was also a student. Her classmates reportedly included other idols like CLASS:y’s Jimin, RESCENE’s Minami, and Candy Shop’s Sarang. Before joining YG Entertainment, she had successfully passed auditions for JYP Entertainment and Banana Culture.

Controversies

N-Word Controversy

Ahyeon sparked controversy for using the N-word (a sensitive term with racial implications) while rapping a cover of Feeling Myself by Nicki Minaj. Social media quickly divided into various sides, with many fans expressing frustration over the choice of a controversial song and YG’s lax management of underage idols. Following this scandal, Ahyeon announced her withdrawal from BABYMONSTER’s initial debut lineup due to health issues.

Performance Critism

Ahyeon has recently faced criticism from audiences for showing a lack of enthusiasm in group performances, earning her the label of “lazy dancer.” Some fans have observed that Ahyeon often performs moves with less precision or energy compared to other BABYMONSTER members, which detracts from the group’s cohesion on stage.

However, Ahyeon was previously criticized for “over-dancing”—performing moves too intensely, overshadowing other BABYMONSTER members. Many viewers felt that Ahyeon often tried to stand out by dancing excessively, disrupting the group’s balance and harmony.

This left some fans dissatisfied, feeling that, despite her recognized talent, Ahyeon hasn’t yet adjusted her performance style to go well with her teammates.
