Baek Ji Young and TXT’s Soobin break down in tears over tragic Cheonan Elementary School soccer team fire that left 25 casualties
The March 27th episode of SBS’s “Story of the Day When You Bite Your Tail” (Ep.168), titled “Nightmare Dormitory: Cheonan Elementary Soccer Team Fire“, sheds light on the devastating incident that claimed 25 lives. The episode recounts the sorrowful yet resilient stories of the children who held onto their dreams in the worst of circumstances. Baek Ji Young, Soobin and Park Byung Eun appeared as listeners and reportedly cried so much that filming had to be paused.
Particularly, when the last survivor, Yoon Jang Ho (then a 6th-grade student), appeared, the listeners were left speechless and wept uncontrollably. Baek Ji Young burst into tears upon seeing Yoon Jang Ho, who suffered severe burns, saying, “I can’t even begin to imagine the pain these kids went through.”
After the fire, Yoon Jang Ho’s mother told him, “Jang Ho, the dorm caught fire. Many of your friends didn’t make it.” Yoon Jang Ho recalled asking his mom, “I’m in so much pain—please just let me die.” Hearing this, Soobin quietly sobbed, deeply moved by the immense suffering Yoon Jang Ho endured. The broadcast will also reveal the story behind the Cheonan Elementary School soccer uniform made to honor the nine children who became “stars in the sky”.
The production team shared, “This week’s episode is about the dreams of the soccer team kids from prestigious Cheonan Elementary School. March 26th marked the 22nd anniversary of the tragedy, so we’re glad to finally shed light on this lesser-known incident and the survivors’ stories. We hope people remember both the children we lost and those still dreaming.”
