On December 7, Lee Chaeyeon posted on a fan communication platform:

“You’re saying I’m not in a position to talk about politics? Then what kind of position allows someone to talk about politics?” She added, “As a citizen, as a member of society, I’ll decide for myself. I’ll also decide what I talk about. It’s because I’m a celebrity that I’m speaking out. I truly appreciate your concerns, but let’s strive to live in a better world together—a world where we can love freely.”

Her remarks come in the context of recent protests and debates following the declaration of martial law and calls for the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol. On December 7, protests demanding the president’s impeachment took place nationwide. However, in the National Assembly, the impeachment motion was automatically dismissed due to a lack of quorum.

Lee Chaeyeon’s outspoken stance contrasts sharply with Lim Young-woong’s response to similar criticism. A fan had expressed disappointment after Lim Young-woong posted about celebrating his dog’s birthday on social media amid the ongoing political unrest. His replies—“What?”,Am I a politician?”, and “Why should I speak out?”—sparked disappointment among some fans.

Meanwhile, many other celebrities have actively voiced their opinions or participated in protests. Film director Bong Joon-ho, actress Moon So-ri, and over 2,500 members of the film industry signed a statement demanding President Yoon’s dismissal and arrest. Other public figures, including Go Ah-sung, Go Min-si, Lee El, Lee Dong-wook, Gongchan, Shinwoo, ZEROBASEONE’s Park Gun-wook, Shin So-yul, Kim Ji-chul, and Lee Young-jin, have joined protests or expressed their views through social media.
