A heartbreaking episode of SBS’s investigative program Curious Stories Y aired on April 25, bringing to light the tragic story of a young woman who died by suicide just months before her wedding. Her final message: “I’m innocent.”

The Tragic Death of a Bride-to-Be

The episode follows the story of Ji-soo (alias), who was engaged to Gun-woo (alias) after years of unrequited love blossomed into a relationship. The couple had legally registered their marriage in July of last year, with a ceremony planned for December. But in January, Ji-soo was found dead at home from acute drug intoxication, a sudden and devastating end to what should have been a joyful time.

Gun-woo, who had briefly stepped out when the incident occurred, was left in shock and confusion. It wasn’t until Ji-soo’s funeral that a disturbing layer of the story surfaced. “At the funeral, her friends pulled me aside and asked, ‘Did you know she was being threatened?’” he recalled.

Upon checking Ji-soo’s phone, Gun-woo discovered a video and handwritten notes that appeared to be her final messages. In them, Ji-soo expressed fear, distress, and feelings of injustice. She named a man, Choi (alias), a former schoolmate, as a source of her suffering.

The Threats, the System, and the Final Words: “I’m Innocent”

According to Ji-soo’s friend, her trauma traced back to a sexual assault by two acquaintances, Choi and Yang (aliases), which occurred three years prior. Despite reporting the incident to the police, the case was dropped by prosecutors. Then, in September of last year, Choi reappeared—this time, allegedly demanding hush money from Ji-soo. “He said, ‘Since we weren’t charged, give us money—or we’ll sue you for false accusations,’” the friend revealed.

Although police launched a new investigation and Choi and Yang agreed to a settlement for damages, the situation worsened. About 14 months after the initial non-prosecution ruling, Choi contacted Ji-soo again, demanding the return of the settlement money, claiming there had been no assault and that he never agreed to any compensation.

Faced with renewed threats and mounting psychological pressure, Ji-soo left behind a haunting note that simply read, “I’m innocent.” SBS’s Curious Stories Y now raises the most painful and pressing inquiry: What really happened to Ji-soo? Was her death a result of a deeply broken justice system—and the trauma that never truly left her?

The broadcast has reignited public outrage, with calls for transparency and justice. As the investigation continues, Ji-soo’s story stands as a painful reminder of the unseen battles many victims face long after the legal system turns away.
