On November 22, the 2024 MAMA AWARDS took place at the Kyocera Dome Osaka in Japan. The event had generated huge expectations, especially with the announcement of the “world premiere” of Bruno Mars and Rosé’s ‘APT.’ stage.

Earlier, ‘APT.’ had been released as a pre-single ahead of Rosé’s official comeback, with Bruno Mars collaborating on the track. The song quickly gained widespread attention, topping music charts in Korea and dominating global charts, including the Billboard charts in the U.S. and the UK Official Singles Chart. It became a global hit, sparking the ‘APT.’ craze worldwide.

The marketing for ‘APT.’ at MAMA was a major draw, with fans eagerly anticipating a live performance. However, the reveal of the stage left fans disappointed. Instead of a live show, they were given a pre-recorded performance, which felt lackluster compared to the passionate live audience reactions they had hoped for.

Japanese fans, in particular, expressed their frustration. Bruno Mars, a popular figure in Japan, had recently worked with a major shopping center brand for a catchy advertisement, further fueling anticipation for his appearance at MAMA. However, the lack of a live performance led to widespread disappointment among the Japanese audience.

After the stage was revealed, fans flooded social media with criticism, saying things like, “They made a pre-recording of ‘APT.’ that was already done,” and “This feels like a scam at this point,” and “We got duped for the world premiere stage.”
