On May 12 (local time), just one day ahead of the festival’s opening, Cannes organizers posted on the official website, “To maintain decorum, nudity is prohibited in all areas of the festival, including the red carpet.”

In addition, the festival stated that “voluminous, extravagant outfits”, particularly those with overly long trains that hinder movement and disrupt theater seating, will not be permitted. The organizers clearly warned that anyone who fails to comply with the rules may be denied red carpet access.

International media interpreted this policy as a direct response to the growing trend of controversial fashion statements at global events. Notably, Bianca Censori’s almost-nude dress at the Grammy Awards in February was cited as an example of the types of outfits Cannes seeks to avoid. While Cannes has long been known for its strict dress code—including a mandatory tuxedo rule for men—some previous celebrity outfits have drawn attention away from the films themselves, sparking criticism. For instance, last year, model Bella Hadid stirred controversy when she wore an apricot-colored see-through dress exposing her chest at the premiere of The Apprentice.

Despite the absence of any Korean feature films in the competition or out-of-competition categories this year, Korean stars will still make their mark. Actresses Kim Go-eun and Han So-hee are set to walk the Cannes red carpet as global brand ambassadors, showcasing Korea’s presence at the prestigious event.

According to News1, Kim Go-eun will appear on the red carpet on May 14 (local time) representing a coffee capsule machine brand. Han So-hee, also a brand ambassador for a major luxury label, will grace the red carpet wearing signature items from the brand.

The 78th Cannes Film Festival will take place from May 13 to 24 in Cannes, France, and all eyes will be on the red carpet—not just for fashion statements, but for how well decorum and cinematic artistry are upheld.
