Growing up in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province, under the care of a potter father and a mother known for her culinary skills, Chun Woo-hee spent her school years as a shy but responsible student.
It was during high school that a fateful decision changed the course of her life joining the theater club. There, she discovered a deep love for acting, which ultimately led her to pursue a career in the field.
Her journey, however, wasn’t smooth. During auditions, Chun frequently heard comments like “You’re not pretty enough” or “You don’t have the right face for this.” While such words could have discouraged many, Chun Woo-hee embraced them.
She turned those perceptions into strength, building confidence by creating her own acting portfolio and adopting the mindset, “There is no one else like me.“
Chun made her breakthrough with a compelling performance as the delinquent Sang-mi in the 2011 film Sunny. But it was her lead role in Han Gong-ju, where she portrayed a deeply traumatized young woman, that established her as a formidable actress capable of portraying raw, complex emotions.
The performance earned her widespread critical acclaim and multiple awards.
In The Wailing, Chun captivated audiences and international critics alike with her mysterious portrayal of “Mu-myeong,” earning a spot on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet.
Her unique presence and ability to disappear into any role solidified her reputation as a “true actress,” beyond labels and physical expectations.
Now celebrating 20 years in the industry, Chun remains passionate and purposeful. “I have confidence in my acting and I take responsibility for it. I believe I will become an even better actress in the future,” she says.
