Coupang Play Announces Free Streaming Service for All Users Starting June 2025

On May 9, Coupang Play revealed that beginning in June, its service will be available not only to WOW members but also to regular Coupang members free of charge. With this, Coupang Play becomes the first in Korea to launch a fully free, ad-supported OTT service. Regular users can now access all content—including original series like “SNL Korea”, “Boyhood” and “Family Matters”, as well as domestic and international TV shows, movies, sports, kids’ content and live news—by simply watching ads.

Unlike traditional free trials or limited-time events, this is a permanent and comprehensive policy shift. Ads will appear in various formats such as pre-roll and mid-roll, but are designed to minimally disrupt the viewing experience. Going beyond merely waiving monthly fees, Coupang Play’s approach of opening all content to all users in exchange for ad views is a groundbreaking first in the Korean OTT landscape.
A Coupang Play spokesperson stated, “Coupang Play, which has been loved by WOW members, is now accessible to the entire nation for free. We will continue to innovate to provide diverse and high-quality content in the most reasonable way possible.”

Benefits for WOW members are also being significantly upgraded. Features like 4K high-definition streaming and multi-channel audio, previously offered only in a limited capacity, will now be fully supported. Additionally, the “Coupang Play Club” rewards program will offer perks such as free access to new films and live show tapings. WOW members will also get early access to the upcoming “PASS” add-on service.
The “PASS” service is a subscription-based add-on for users who want to enjoy specialized content in specific genres—such as latest movies, Japanese and Chinese dramas, or sports—at an additional monthly fee. Initially available exclusively to WOW members, the “PASS” option will eventually roll out to regular users as well.
Coupang Play’s decision signals a major shake-up in the Korean OTT industry. In an environment marked by rising subscription costs and fierce competition over exclusive content, this free model offers users a compelling alternative—and is expected to positively influence Coupang Play’s market share.
Further details regarding the free access for regular members and the launch of “PASS” will be announced through the Coupang Play app and official website. All eyes are now on how this unprecedented move will reshape the future of OTT streaming in Korea.
