Malaysian lawmaker Wee Ka Siong said, “DJ Monk NewJeansNim angered the Buddhist community in Malaysia when he disguised himself as a Buddhist monk and performed at the club, which gave a wrong perception of Buddhist values and teachings”.

President of the Malaysian Chinese Association also stated, “His controversial acts have hurt the feelings of the Buddhist community, which will celebrate Vesak Day (the festival commemorating the birth, enlightenment and death of the Buddha) in two weeks’ time”.

As if he acknowledged the negative comments, Yoon Seong-ho posted a video on May 11th with the caption, saying “On-site reactions of Monk New Jin’s performance in Malaysia”. The video shows many audiences responding enthusiastically to him.

On the other hand, ‘Monk New Jin’ Yoon Seong-ho is welcomed by the Korean Buddhist community. He will appear as a DJ at an EDM concert on a stage set up in the vicinity of Jogyesa Temple for Buddha’s Birthday on May 12th.

At the press conference that took place ahead of Buddha’s Birthday, monk Jinwoo, also known as the general secretary of Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, said, “Many young people look at the monks with solemn, reverent and heavy eyes”. Giving a positive evaluation of Monk New Jin, he continued, “His role is to be the pioneer in approaching young people and soothing their hearts”. Monk Jinwoo then gave DJ Monk New Jina a headset and a bead as gifts.

Meanwhile, Yoon Seong-ho debuted as a comedian through KBS’s 16th open recruitment in 2001. Back then, he played the role of a character with a bald head. He created hot topics for his appearance at an EDM party as a DJ in May last year, during the Lantern Festival. Since then, he has been active under the name Monk NewJeansNim.
