About

Dreamcatcher is a 7-member multi-national girl group, who stands out with their horror concept and rock/metal-based music.

The group name, “Dreamcatcher”, reflects the meaning of “dream fairies who catch nightmares”, with each member representing a nightmare or fear. Dreamcatcher’s MVs often follow a solid worldview with a horror-based dark concept, and their music is often fast-paced with heavy rock, metal, or EDM elements.

Career

Debut as MINX

dreamcatcher

In September 2014, members JiU, SuA, Siyeon, Yoohyeon and Dami debuted as a 5-member girl group named “MINX”, which embraced a bright and happy concept. MINX released a digital single and a mini-album, before their agency, Happyface Entertainment, announced that the girl group will be re-debuting with 2 new members –  Handong and Gahyun.

Re-debut as Dreamcatcher

On January 13, 2017, Dreamcatcher officially debuted with the 1st single album “Nightmare” and title track “Chase Me”, kicking off their “Nightmare Series”.

The girl group has since dropped various other albums and singles under a dark and horror-based concept, slowly but surely gaining attention, despite their music – which is heavily inspired by the rock genre – not being popular with the public.

In fact, the girl group described themselves as an “elevator idol” group, which grows step by step

Despite not being mainstream in Korea, Dreamcatcher managed to secure a pretty stable international fanbase, which was acknowledged by Korean netizens.

DREAMCATCHER

Dreamcatcher, which has undergone various difficulties together as a girl group under a small company, revealed that despite the members’ relationship being rocky at first, they now know and understand each other well

In fact, the girl group managed to survive the “7-year-curse” in K-pop, as all members, including Chinese member Handong, have renewed their contract with their agency.

Departure of 3 Members

On March 10, 2025, it was announced that members Handong, Dami, and Gahyun, have left the agency of Dreamcatcher, Dreamcatcher Company. While it was stated that the 3 members will continue their activities as part of Dreamcatcher, many fans still express concerns.

Controversies & Hot Topics

Vote rigging

Back in 2022, the MAMA Music Awards announced that it will make all-out efforts to prevent fraudulent voting, and cited that the fandom of Dreamcatcher seemed to have partaken in illegal voting. In particular, the voting graph for the girl group rose abnormally at a certain point, raising suspicions.

e-Cigarette smoking

Previously, when Dreamcatcher dropped behind-the-scenes videos of their 2023 tour in the US, member Yoohyun was spotted holding a white object in one hand, leading to suspicions of her smoking e-Cigarettes

While the suspicions were never confirmed, fans did not criticize Yoohyun, instead saying that the female idol can do what she likes as she’s a grown adult.

Health issue

In July 2024, it was announced that member Siyeon had to visit the hospital due to symptoms of poor health and anxiety. As a result, she had to be absent from the promotional activities for Dreamcatcher’s 10th mini-album “VirtuouS”.

Unique lightstick

The official lightstick of Dreamcatcher once became a hot topic in Korea due to its unique design. In particular, the lightstick comes with extension, making it as long as 78.5 cm – like a magic scepter.

On top of that, the lightstick box was designed in the shape of a coffin, resonating with the girl group’s horror concept.
