Elderly Rappers Recreate Iconic “Sunny” Scene, Perform Hip-hop at Fellow Member’s Funeral

At the funeral of their departed member, the grandmothers performed a rap song, all while dressed in hip-hop attire.
According to Newsis and News1, on October 28, the remaining members of the grandmother rap group, with an average age of 85, performed a memorial rap at the funeral of Seo Mu-seok, which was held in Dalseo-gu, Daegu. Dressed in hip-hop clothing, they performed a tribute rap featuring lyrics that proclaimed “It’s not rap without Mu-seok.”
Despite being diagnosed with stage 3 blood cancer in January and given just three months to live, Grandmother Seo Mu-seok kept her condition private to continue her passion for rap. Even as the cancer spread, she never missed practice, showing up twice a week at the senior center to rehearse. Although she surpassed doctors’ three-month prognosis and continued her activities as a rapper, her health deteriorated rapidly early this month, leading to her passing.

The performance by the grandmothers at Seo Mu-seok’s funeral has drawn comparisons to the memorable scene from the movie “Sunny.” In the 2011 box office hit, friends gather at a funeral to dance joyfully to Boney M’s “Sunny,” following their leader Chun-hwa’s last wishes.
Kang Hyeong-cheol, the director of “Sunny,” commented, “Since the funeral is for the deceased, it should be conducted in the way they would have most appreciated.” He added, “I always thought this could happen in real life, not just in movies, and I’m sure the grandmother who was passionate about rap and her family would have been pleased.”
The performance has gained additional attention following the recent news that the late actress Kim Soo-mi had left instructions requesting people to “dance instead of crying” at her funeral.
Kim Jae-wook, the mayor of Chilgok-gun, has expressed interest in producing both a film and musical about Suni and the Seven Princesses. He stated, “We plan to develop this into cultural content that will promote Chilgok while highlighting our elderly citizens’ dedication and passion.”
Suni and the Seven Princesses was formed in August last year by eight grandmothers living in Jicheon-myeon, Chilgok-gun, with an average age of 85. International media has highlighted them as “K-Grandmas,” and they have gained recognition through various advertisements and promotional activities.
