On June 20th, an interview with Koo Kyo-hwan, who appeared in “Escape” (directed by Lee Jong-pil), was held at a café located in Jongno-gu, Seoul. “Escape” depicts a life-and-death chase between North Korean soldier Kyu Nam (Lee Je-hoon), who begins his escape for tomorrow, and State Security Department Major Hyun Sang (Koo Kyo-hwan), who pursues him to protect today.

In the film, Koo Kyo-hwan plays the role of Hyun Sang, a character who instills fear with his fierce charisma but also has a mysterious past with Woo Min (Song Kang), a connection made during his study abroad in Russia.

Koo Kyo-hwan described Song Kang, “Song Kang is in the same agency with me. The way I saw him at the agency’s 20th-anniversary party and events is exactly how he appeared in the work. Song Kang is a very interesting person. Sometimes he seems more mature than me, and other times he feels like a younger brother I want to keep by my side. It’s fun to watch him.”

In the film, Woo Min is the character who creates the greatest sense of dissonance between reality and ideals for Hyun Sang. Koo Kyo-hwan explained, “To describe Woo Min, it might sound corny, but he’s like a ‘dream-like existence’ or ‘the place Hyun Sang wanted to go’. I hope the audience views Woo Min with a broad perspective.

Meanwhile, “Escape” featuring the passionate performances of Koo Kyo-hwan and Song Kang is set to be released on July 3rd.
