GOT7 (갓세븐) is a 7-member boy group that debuted on January 16, 2014, under JYP Entertainment. The self-produced group consists of members from South Korea, Hong Kong, Thailand and the US, who have since gone to different agencies, yet still maintain a tight bond.

The group name, ‘GOT7’, means ‘seven lucky people’. 

Meanwhile, while the official fandom name of the group is IGOT7, an unofficial fandom name – Ahgase (아가새, meaning ‘baby bird’ in Korean), is also widely used. This leads to the group’s official lightstick including the figure of a bird.

Career

Pre-debut

Before GOT7’s debut, members JAY B and Jinyoung (formerly known as ‘Junior’), already debuted as a duo called “JJ Project”. In addition, Jackson, Mark, BamBam, and Yugyeom, appeared as JYP trainees for YG’s survival program “WIN: Who Is Next”.

Debut & JYP Entertainment

GOT7 made their official debut in January 2014 with the single “Girls Girls Girls”, which feature a strong choreography including acrobatic and martial arts-inspired moves. The album that includes “Girls Girls Girls”, “Got It?”, was released a few days later, gaining massive attention to the point of topping the Billboard World Albums Chart.

As a group formed with the aim of international promotions, GOT7 quickly expanded their activities overseas, starting with two debut showcases in Japan in April 2014. 

They made their Japanese debut with the single “Around the World” on October 22 of the same year, and began their 1st Japan Tour just a few weeks prior.

The group also dropped their 1st full-length album in November 2014. In 2015, GOT7 continued to prove their global popularity with their Asian Showcase Tour. 

In March 2016, GOT7 dropped “Flight Log: Departure”, the 1st album where members contributed to writing and composing the songs. Afterward, on April 28, the group kicked off their first world tour. 

In 2017, the sub-unit JJ made a comeback, whereas Jackson made his solo debut on August 26 of the same year.

At the time, having founded his own label and being active as a solo artist, Jackson withdrew from Japanese promotions with GOT7 in order to “maintain his health condition”. 

In 2019, GOT7’s second sub-unit, Jus2, debuted with the mini album “Focus”. In addition, across the years, the boy group consistently dropped various successful albums.

Departure from JYP, focus on solo activities

On January 11, 2021, JYP Entertainment officially announced that all members of GOT7 would leave the agency after their contract expired

Despite the departure with each member going to a different agency, on February 20, GOT7 dropped the track “Encore”, which is about the boy group’s love for fans. 

In 2022, GOT7 made a full group comeback and held some group fancons, before members JAY B and Jinyoung enlisted in the military. 

Throughout this time, each member was focused on their solo careers. 

Now, on December 20, after Jinyoung and JAY B’s discharge, GOT7 has announced that they will be releasing their 12th mini album “Winter Heptagon”, showing their strong bond as a group despite separation by agencies. 

Controversy & Personal Life

In 2023, Jackson was accused of charging a huge fee for fans wanting to take intimate photos, leading to criticisms that he was using fans like an ATM. The male idol also faced criticisms after lashing out at foreign media, who slammed his home country, China. 

Meanwhile, Jay B faced allegations of sending DMs (direct messages) to over 200,000 female influencers, most of whom post sexy photos.  

Additionally, Youngjae had to clarify his stance after a controversy where he was accused of using special privilege for Bruno Mars’ concert in Korea.

Dating rumors

Back in 2022, dating rumors emerged between Jackson and (G)I-DLE Yuqi, with some accusing the male idol of cheating on her. However, Jackson’s side has refuted the rumors.  

Moreover, Youngjae was accused of dating fellow single, LOVEY. However, the male idol’s side quickly shut down the rumors, maintaining that the two are just colleagues in music activities. 

Within the same year, JAY B faced dating rumors with Youtuber Pure.D

On the other hand, In September 2024, dating rumors between BamBam and BLACKPINK’s Jennie emerged after the two were spotted together in Los Angeles. However, Jennie’s side quickly denied the rumor, stating that the two were just friends.
