On April 26, the VIP premiere of Hi.5 was held at CGV Yongsan I’Park Mall in Seoul, attended by director Kang Hyung-chul and main cast members including Lee Jae-in, Ahn Jae Hong, Ra Mi-ran, Kim Hee-won, Oh Jung-se, and Park Jin Young. During the event, Lee Jae-in, who plays the protagonist Wan-seo, struggled to hold back her emotions in front of her family and close friends.

This is my theater,” Lee Jae-in said, bowing deeply before her loved ones. “My mom, dad, younger sibling, and those I love are all here… I’m so grateful to be able to show this film to them,” she shared tearfully.

Lee Jae-in’s emotional response carries special meaning. Although all filming wrapped in 2021, the release was repeatedly postponed due to extensive post-production and the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, a drug-related scandal involving co-star Yoo Ah In cast uncertainty over the film’s release. Despite these hurdles, Hi.5 finally secured a nationwide release this year.

Lee Jae-in, who was a high schooler during filming, is now an adult, stepping into the spotlight with her first leading role. She portrays Wan-seo, a Taekwondo girl who gains superhuman strength after receiving an organ transplant. The story follows five ordinary individuals who acquire different supernatural abilities after receiving transplants of different organs and band together to fight against those seeking to exploit their powers.

With a reported production budget between 15 to 20 billion KRW, Hi.5 is a high-profile comic action film directed by Kang Hyung-chul, known for hits like Scandal Makers and Sunny. The film blends B-grade comedy with exhilarating action scenes set in familiar Korean neighborhoods, creating a unique local flavor distinct from Hollywood productions.

Kang Hyung-chul explained, “While the film is about superpowers, the real story is about human relationships and the strength of family.” This is highlighted by a key scene where Wan-seo’s father, played by Oh Jung-se, confronts villains without any powers, symbolizing the true power of familial love.

The cast’s chemistry has also drawn attention, with Ahn Jae Hong praising the joyful atmosphere on set and Ra Mi-ran recalling intense filming experiences during chase scenes. Notably, a surprising kiss scene between Ahn Jae Hong and Yoo Ah In has become a talking point, symbolizing unity among conflicted characters.

Despite concerns over Yoo Ah In’s scandal, director Kang Hyung-chul expressed confidence, “This is not a one-person film. Many dedicated individuals poured their hearts into this project. The film’s energy and joy will outweigh any worries.”
