Hwasa Faced Petition Demanding Withdrawal From MAMAMOO Due To Appearance “It’s The Fate Of An Idol”

Recently, SBS Special aired a video titled “Bodymentary – Confessions About Fat,” featuring Kim Wan-sun, Han Seung-yeon, Jun Hyo-seong, Soyou, and Hwasa, where they openly discussed their struggles with body image.

In the video, 22-year veteran stylist Jung Seol expressed concerns about the idol industry, “The obsession with weight, that number, is truly heartbreaking. But that number can’t be the same for everyone. It’s not like meat where 41kg means ‘this is the size of the piece’. It’s just not how it works.“
Known for her unique looks and confidence, Hwasa recalled a petition demanding her withdrawal from MAMAMOO due to her appearance. She reflected “It’s the fate of an idol, but back then, beauty standards were particularly strict”, expressing a sense of bitterness.
Kim Wan-sun shared, “I’m really worried about my belly fat,” revealing that even after 39 years in the industry, she still struggles with body image issues.
Han Seung-yeon called her relationship with weight a “love-hate relationship,” while Hwasa expressed, “I’m really sick of it,” showing her frustration. Soyou, joking in front of the camera, “Doesn’t it feel good when you touch it?” while touching her belly fat.
Jun Hyo-seong commented, “Is this how much weight I need to lose to appear on camera? Why do they walk around with their arms like that? It feels like this,” expressing a sense of pressure. Han Seung-yeon also openly said, “I think my job is to embody that look.”

Hwasa further revealed, “I took pills to lose that thigh fat. I felt like all my natural charm just disappeared.” She admitted that she had no choice but to diet in such extreme ways. Soyou shared how she felt disgusted with her body when she gained weight, revealing the serious stress it caused her.
Hwasa shared her experience, “At that time as a trainee, it was a period where you had to push yourself hard, and I didn’t know what the right way was. Everyone said you had to do it like that to debut, so I didn’t eat at all. On weigh-in days, the members and I would go to the pharmacy and take pills to empty our stomachs before stepping on the scale.“
Hwasa also recalled sneaking food, “I once ate black sesame injeolmi (Korean rice cakes) in secret. But afterward, I thought, ‘I worked so hard to lose weight under all this stress, how could I eat again?’ All those feelings of guilt, anger and everything else overwhelmed me. I sobbed while vomiting it all back up. That’s how it turned into anorexia“, reflecting on the hardships she endured as a trainee.
Jun Hyo-seong also opened up, “It was a cycle of binge eating, yo-yo dieting, and embarrassment.” Hwasa added, “Guilt, anger, and all sorts of emotions just came rushing in.”
Meanwhile, SBS Special “Bodymentary – Confessions About Fat” will air on December 8 at 11:05 PM (KST).
