The wildfire that broke out in Uiseong, Gyeongbuk on March 22 has spread to Andong and nearby regions, causing widespread destruction to cultural heritage sites — including Manhyujeong Pavilion, a famed filming location for the drama “Mr. Sunshine.”

On March 25, authorities confirmed that the fire reached areas including Cheongsong’s Juwangsan National Park, Yeongyang, and Yeongdeok. Among the damaged sites was the thousand-year-old Gounsa Temple, where Yeonsujeon Hall was destroyed. Fortunately, National Treasure No. 246, the Seated Stone Buddha, was safely relocated before flames arrived.

Manhyujeong in Andong, built during the Joseon Dynasty as a retreat for scholar Kim Gye-haeng, was also completely lost despite firefighting efforts. The pavilion, surrounded by scenic forests and streams, gained global recognition after its appearance in “Mr. Sunshine,” especially for the iconic scene where Lee Byung-hun tells Kim Tae-ri, “Let’s do it. Love. With me.”

The blaze has disrupted transportation, with KORAIL (Korea Railroad Corporation) halting train services between Yeongju and Gyeongju. In response to the disaster, several celebrities, including Lee Chan-won, Im Si-wan, Yoo Jae-suk, and WINNER’s Kim Jin-woo, have donated to relief efforts.
As Korea mourns the loss of these cultural landmarks, experts are urging stronger protective measures to safeguard national heritage from future natural disasters.
