ITZY’s Yeji Accused of Plagiarizing Huge Western Star, Defended by Netizens

Recently, JYP dropped the teaser for the MV of ITZY’s Yeji’s solo title track “Air”. However, immediately after the teaser was unveiled, plagiarism accusations directed at the female idol started to emerge. In particular, some internet users claimed that “Air” is a direct copy of the track “Gone”, which was released in 2019 by British artist Charlie XCX.

According to these netizens, “Air” basically stole the beat of “Gone” and sped it up, and even the image Yeji lying on a car is similar to Charlie XCX in the “Gone” MV. As a result, the quotes for Yeji’s teaser on SNS platform X (formerly Twitter) have become filled with criticisms and comments about Charlie XCX.

However, many netizens defended Yeji against the plagiarism allegations, pointing out that ITZY has been releasing music in the same genre ever since their debut. Others also pointed out that the similarities between “Gone” and “Air” basically just boil down to electropop and house music – a genre partly popularized by Charlie XCX, but is by no means owned by the female star.

On top of this, even some of Charlie XCX fans are perplexed by the accusations, with some saying that while it’s likely that the British star was an inspiration, the similarities are not enough to call this copying. Additionally, it was pointed out that producer SOPHIE has worked with both Charlie XCX and ITZY, hence the shared music style.

On the other hand, ITZY’s Yeji will make her solo debut with the mini album “Air” and the title track of the same name on March 10, 2025.
