IU’s latest music video, “A Beautiful Person,” from her third remake album Flower Bookmark 3, is captivating fans with its ethereal visuals and a surprise appearance by ASTRO’s Cha Eun-woo. A reinterpretation of the classic by rock legend Shin Jung-hyeon, the MV unfolds a symbolic narrative of light and shadow, representing a boy and girl meeting across different stages of life.
The poetic storyline shows a masked boy blinded by light encountering a masked girl in shadow. As they remove their disguises, the reveal of IU and Cha Eun-woo delivers a powerful emotional climax. Set to lyrics like “You resemble a violet in May,” the duo’s subtle performances and eye contact elevate the dreamlike mood of the video.
On her YouTube channel 이지금 (Now), IU explained the deep symbolism, “The lyrics of this song can be interpreted in multiple ways, so I wondered how I should approach it. Then I thought—maybe this is something I’m saying to myself. That mindset guided how I sang the song, and I considered applying that perspective to the music video’s storyline as well.”
She continued, “But then a completely new concept involving light and shadow was suggested. Since the core theme is about seeing, I was told that when light and shadow face each other, they allow us to see our true selves. That interpretation stuck with me. I played the shadow, so I gave a lot of thought to who should represent the light.”
IU then shared her confidence about casting Cha Eun-woo, “It was a unanimous decision. I don’t think there was any room for doubt.”
Fans were treated to behind-the-scenes moments of IU and Cha Eun-woo greeting each other warmly, joking, and showing support during filming. The camaraderie between the two added depth to the shoot, earning admiration from the crew.
