IU Delights Grandmas of “When Life Gives You Tangerines” with Hermes Scarves and Heartfelt Visit
On June 19, IU quietly visited the art exhibition featuring paintings by the “Jeju Art Grandmas,” elderly women who transitioned from farming to painting late in life. Averaging 87 years old, these grandmas became beloved figures thanks to their emotional journey portrayed in the Netflix series When Life Gives You Tangerines, where IU played the character Ae-sun.
True to her word, IU showed up at the gallery, humbly posting, “I came to keep my promise to the Jeju art grandmas.” Despite calling it a casual visit, she arrived like a “Santa Claus,” bearing handwritten letters and a bundle of heartfelt gifts.
Among them were luxurious silk scarves from Hermès, which she delicately wrapped around each grandma’s shoulders. According to exhibition organizers, “In an embrace of solidarity, Ae-sun gently cloaked the grandmas with scarves like laying silk on their path.”
IU respected the gallery’s rules by wearing gloves and quietly admiring pieces like the painting of a dog named Gwansik and vibrant sunflower artworks. Her deep respect and emotional warmth made the moment especially memorable.
