N-Word Controversy

Jackson Wang of GOT7 is once again in the spotlight, this time over a controversial moment during his recent appearance on DIVE Studios’ “Daebak Show” with Eric Nam, Ashley Choi, and BTOB’s Peniel. A specific clip from the show has sparked heated debate online, with some accusing Jackson of using the N-word (a term with racist connotations) – a claim others strongly refute.

The controversy stems from a brief moment in the show’s game segment. In particular, after answering a question incorrectly, Jackson stood up and tossed his notebook aside in apparent frustration. On YouTube, Jackson’s sound was beeped, but a netizen published a video excerpt where the male idol allegedly said the N-word, claiming that they secured the footage from Weibo, where DIVE Studios reportedly did not beep out the sound.

Despite now having been deleted, said netizen’s post quickly circulated online, causing confusion and backlash.

So far, online reactions have been divided, with many expressing disappointment and concern, especially considering the sensitivity around the use of racial slurs. In fact, BLACKPINK recently came under scrutiny for using the n-work after leaked trainee footage of members were released, while KISS OF LIFE is facing intense backlash for cultural appropriation.

On the other hand, supporters argue that Jackson did not use a slur, but rather his usual phrase “brother” a term he often uses across his interviews and content. Many pointed out that the word in question wasn’t clearly audible, so the N-word accusations are groundless. Some fans also clarified that DIVE Studios doesn’t operate a Weibo account disputing claims that the clip was edited or altered for Chinese platforms.

Official Statement

A day after the controversy surfaced, DIVE Studios issued an official statement, refuting the accusations. In particular, the studio published the original and unedited footage of Jackson, where he can clearly be heard saying “brother”. They also insisted that the video of Jackson using the N-word is “inaccurate” and “misleading”.

In response, fans of Jackson are asking DIVE Studios to be more careful when using the beep sound for artists, considering that it may lead to misunderstandings and speculations. They also demand an apology for those who spread hate and misinformation about Jackson.
