Jang Shin Young Returns to Small Screen After 3 Years with Single Mom Role Following Husband’s Affair
On April 8, MBC’s new daily drama “A Woman Who Swallowed the Sun” announced its cast, including Jang Shin Young, Seo Ha Joon, Yoon Ah Jung and Oh Chang Seok.
“A Woman Who Swallowed the Sun” is a revenge drama about a woman who confronts a powerful conglomerate for the sake of her only daughter in a world where victims are turned into perpetrators. Directed by Kim Jin Hyung (Meant to Be) and written by Seol Kyung Eun (Hide and Seek, The Women’s Room), the series is already garnering buzz for its intense, relatable storyline.
Jang Shin Young plays Baek Seol Hee, a bright and positive single mother. She runs a small diner and raises her daughter alone, but her peaceful life crumbles due to a sudden twist of fate. Seol Hee then sets out on a fierce path of revenge. Jang Shin Young is expected to deliver a powerful performance, capturing the warmth of motherhood and the coldness of revenge with nuanced emotional depth.
Seo Ha Joon will portray Moon Tae Kyung, the head of new business at Minkang Distribution. Orphaned by a mysterious accident and adopted to the U.S. as a child, he returns to Korea 25 years later to reclaim what he lost. His fate intertwines with Baek Seol Hee, becoming both a romantic and dramatic pivot point in the story.
Yoon Ah Jung plays Min Kyung Chae, the daughter of Minkang Distribution’s owner and the next successor. Armed with sharp intellect and charisma backed by wealth, she becomes an intense rival to Baek Seol Hee.
Oh Chang Seok appears as Kim Sun Jae, the head of the legal team at Minkang Distribution. He once coldly abandoned Seol Hee, who supported him during his exam prep days, and now aims to marry into the conglomerate family. Known for his chilling portrayals of villains, Oh Chang Seok is expected to bring added tension and immersion to the drama.
The production team commented, “The synergy between these four actors each with a unique charm and perfect character alignment will be a key highlight. With an immersive storyline and non-stop suspense, we ask for much anticipation ahead of the premiere.”
“A Woman Who Swallowed the Sun” is scheduled to air following “Desperate Mrs. Seonju”.
Meanwhile, Jang Shin Young remarried Kang Kyung Joon in 2018 after five years of dating. In December 2023, Kang Kyung Joon faced a lawsuit for damages of ₩50 million after being named in an extramarital affair case, bringing crisis to their household. The case was settled in July 2024 when Kang Kyung Joon accepted the plaintiff’s claims in court.
In August 2024, Jang Shin Young addressed the issue via social media, “Though we went through a time of unspeakable pain, we have chosen to live together again under one roof solely for our children.”
