BLACKPINK’s Jennie Opens Up About Burnout “I Was Afraid of Hurting People I Love”

Jennie of BLACKPINK is set to reveal the heartfelt and humorous behind-the-scenes stories of her Coachella 2024 performance on tvN’s You Quiz on the Block, airing May 7.
The production team teased her appearance with a playful note:
“Are you ready to hang out with Jennie?! The global icon who lit up Coachella in ruby red is coming to You Quiz! From her legendary stage moments to the emotional ‘Mom, I love you’ ending — and her mom’s unexpected priority: hair health?!”
A Viral “Mom Moment” That Touched Fans
Jennie’s April 21 performance at Coachella’s Outdoor Theatre stage marked a historic moment as she became the first K-pop soloist to perform on that stage. She delivered a stunning set of 13 tracks from her solo album Ruby, including the hit “Like Jennie.”

But beyond the dazzling performance, a sweet backstage moment quickly went viral.
As Jennie walked off stage, her mother greeted her with a tearful embrace — and then, with a mother’s instinct, used her hat to shield Jennie’s exposed shorts, sparking the phrase, “Jennie’s mom’s hand placement made us cry.”

Jennie later shared on You Quiz that her mom had said, “You worked so hard,” while fighting back tears, before simply taking a photo and leaving. The modest yet touching interaction captured hearts worldwide.

Emotional Turbulence Jennie Faced Before Releasing Her Solo Album
Behind her smiles and relaxed demeanor were episodes of burnout and depression. “At one point, I felt like I was only doing things that didn’t feel beautiful. I was afraid that my words and actions might hurt the people I love,” Jennie confessed. She went on to say, “I held onto those feelings and kept asking myself why. It was a time of emotional exhaustion.”
Jennie channeled those struggles into her solo album, Ruby. Host Yoo Jae-suk responded with surprise, “There are 15 songs and 7 music videos for Ruby,” and even joked, “How’s the company holding up?”
In closing, Jennie expressed a mindset of self-encouragement, “So what if it’s not perfect? It’s my first time doing this, too.” Her candid admission that she is still learning to center herself reveals a glimpse into the intense, unseen side of Jennie beyond her dazzling stage presence.
Despite the glam and fame, Jennie’s behind-the-scenes stories reveal a grounded and deeply reflective artist. The show promises to showcase not only Jennie’s polished stage persona but also her humorous, humble side — including a rapid-fire dance challenge segment with hosts Yoo Jae-suk and Jo Se-ho.
Jennie, who is also now a CEO of her own label ODD ATELIER, is expanding her influence beyond music. Her appearance on You Quiz offers fans a chance to see her in a candid light — as a performer, daughter, and entrepreneur.
