The life and career of Ji Sung read like the script of a K-drama itself filled with hardships, perseverance, and a triumphant rise to fame. From facing homelessness in Seoul to becoming one of Korea’s most respected actors, Ji Sung’s journey is nothing short of inspirational.

Inspired by Rain Man, Defying Expectations

Ji Sung’s dream of becoming an actor began in high school after watching the classic film Rain Man. Deeply moved by Dustin Hoffman’s performance, he found his calling. However, his aspirations faced immediate resistance from his father, who strongly opposed a career in the arts.

To appease his family, Ji Sung initially pretended to pursue business studies, secretly applying to drama schools. Unfortunately, his applications were rejected, marking the beginning of a harsh reality check.

From Homelessness to Self-Taught Acting

Unwilling to give up, Ji Sung made the bold decision to move to Seoul, determined to chase his dreams at all costs. With nowhere to stay, he spent nights sleeping in subway stations and public parks, often lurking near broadcasting stations to feel closer to the industry he aspired to join.

At times, he would sneak into broadcasting buildings just to read discarded drama scripts. Without formal training, he taught himself acting by mimicking lines and watching performances, gradually earning small roles in reenactment programs and minor acting gigs.

Breakthrough Roles and Recognition

In a desperate but bold move, Ji Sung directly called the production office of the drama KAIST to ask for an audition. His passion impressed renowned writer Song Ji-na, who was so taken by his enthusiasm and raw talent that she created an entirely new character just for him an unprecedented opportunity.

This marked the end of his days on the streets and the beginning of a real acting career.

Ji Sung’s breakthrough came in 2003 with the hit SBS drama All In, where he starred alongside Lee Byung-hun. After his military service, he returned with New Heart, solidifying his status as a lead actor.

A Happily Ever After Off-Screen

Beyond his professional success, Ji Sung is married to actress Lee Bo-young, often dubbed Korea’s “Nation’s First Love.” The couple has one son and one daughter and are widely admired for their loving and grounded family life.
