In a recent interview with iMBC Entertainment at BH Entertainment’s headquarters in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, Jung Chae-yeon discussed JTBC’s Wednesday drama “Family by Choice” (written by Hong Si-young, directed by Kim Seung-ho).

“Family by Choice” is a romance drama about three individuals who, though unrelated by blood, forge an unbreakable bond during their teenage years. It is based on the Chinese drama “Go Ahead”.

In the series, Jung Chae-yeon plays Yoon Ju-won, the owner of Daldal Bakery. Her character is straightforward, speaks her mind, and tends to forget about bad events the next day.

Ju-won shares a family-like bond with Kim San-ha (played by Hwang In-youp), despite having no biological connection. Over time, their relationship evolves into a romantic one.

Reflecting on the drama’s theme, Jung Chae-yeon said, “‘Family by Choice’ made me think a lot about what truly defines family. It’s not just blood ties or eating meals together—it’s the act of simply gathering around the same table that can create a family.”

When asked which scene made her heart flutter during filming, Jung Chae-yeon named the “tunnel scene”. She shared, “We filmed this scene at dawn, and that day, the director and staff were completely immersed in the moment. Everyone watched quietly, holding their breath, which was amusing.

She explained, “The director sent me many references for the tunnel scene. It was the scene I worried about the most and thought deeply about, but thanks to the incredible support of the crew, it felt like we were acting together. My heart was pounding as we filmed it.”

Jung Chae-yeon also spoke about her efforts to build chemistry with Hwang In-youp. She said, “We discussed a lot about how to make the scenes better. On set, we worked closely with the director and rehearsed extensively. I received a lot of help.”

She also mentioned a particularly moving scene. She recalled, “There’s a scene where young Hae-jun (Bae Hyun-sung) plays basketball. After hearing someone say ‘You must be good at basketball because you take after your dad’, he practices so hard that his hands develop calluses. That was the most heartbreaking and touching scene for me.”

Meanwhile, the 16-episode drama “Family by Choice” is now available for streaming on platforms like Netflix and TVING.
