In a defining moment that underscores the timeless nature of talent, Jung Sung-il took home the Best New Actor in Film award at the 61st Baeksang Arts Awards, held on May 5 at COEX in Gangnam, Seoul. At age 45, the seasoned performer clinched the honor for his acclaimed role in Uprising, signaling a stunning new peak in his evolving career.

Jung triumphed in a competitive field of emerging talent that included Jang Sung-beom (Work to Do), Moon Woo-jin (Dark Nuns), Noh Sang-hyun (Love in the Big City), and Kang Seung-ho (House of the Seasons). Despite his years of experience, this marks his first Baeksang win in a newcomer category—a rarity that both surprised and inspired fans.
In his acceptance speech, Jung said with humility, “You’ve given a gift to an adult on Children’s Day. I didn’t expect anything and even felt embarrassed just being nominated. But I’m incredibly grateful to receive this award.” He continued, “I’m thankful I got to be part of this film, and now that I’ve won Best New Actor, I’ll work even harder.”

Also honored at the ceremony was Roh Yoon-seo, who won Best New Actress for her role in Hear Me: Our Summer. Using sign language to greet the audience—_“I’m actress Roh Yoon-seo”_—she delivered a moving speech about the power of sincerity and communication.
“Some viewers held my hand and said, ‘Thank you for making this film,’ with tears in their eyes,” she said. “I realized that sincerity can be conveyed regardless of language. Thank you to the sign language instructors who helped me turn sign language into something I can carry with pride.”
Hosted in partnership with Gucci, the 61st Baeksang Arts Awards recognized outstanding achievements across film, television, and theater. This year’s theme, “Set Sail Toward Diverse Values,” reflected the growing global impact of Korean popular arts and the inclusive spirit that the Baeksang Awards aim to foster.
