“Jung Woo-sung’s Refusal to Marry Moon Gabi, Despite Criticism, Has a Real Reason”

On November 26, lawyer Ahn Se-hoon discussed this issue on his YouTube channel “Good Lawyer – Men and Women Issues Research Center [Ahn Lawyer TV]” in a video titled “Why Jung Woo-sung Won’t Marry Even Amid Heavy Criticism (feat. 13-Year Divorce Lawyer)“.
In the video, Ahn explained the reasons behind Jung Woo-sung’s stance on the “out-of-wedlock child” scandal.
He stated, “There’s a reason Jung Woo-sung refuses to marry, even though he’s facing a barrage of criticism. No matter what, he’s adamant about not getting married.”
Ahn continued, “Jung Woo-sung acknowledges himself as the biological father but doesn’t want to become Moon Gabi’s husband or the official father of the child. He has made it clear he won’t marry and only intends to cover child support and childbirth expenses. Generally, when a child is involved, most people would choose to marry. But in Jung Woo-sung’s case, marriage poses a significant risk. Is this really something to criticize him for?”
He added, “The question is whether marriage is the only way to take responsibility. Jung Woo-sung’s position is, ‘I’ll take responsibility, but that doesn’t mean I have to marry.’ Of course, this contrasts with the warm and compassionate image he has shown through his advocacy for refugee rights and human rights. His refusal to become Moon Gabi’s husband or the child’s official father might seem cold and calculated. But from a legal perspective, Jung Woo-sung’s decision makes sense.”

Ahn then detailed the financial risks involved. “Based on a 2021 blog post estimating Jung Woo-sung’s wealth, he earns over 700 million KRW per commercial. His total advertisement earnings exceed 40 billion KRW, and he owns real estate worth over 20 billion KRW. Even conservatively, his wealth is estimated at 60 billion KRW. In Korea, there’s a daunting rule about divorce settlements: the ‘5-Year Efficiency, 10-Year Promise’ principle.”
He explained, “Under this principle, if a couple divorces after five years, 30% of the assets are divided. After 10 years, it becomes 50%. If Jung Woo-sung’s wealth is 60 billion KRW, he would have to give Moon Gabi 18 billion KRW after five years and 30 billion KRW after 10 years. Even in the shortest term, the settlement could reach up to 10 billion KRW.”

In contrast, if Jung Woo-sung opts only to pay child support, Ahn stated, “In our legal system, child support is determined based on income brackets. The highest bracket is set for those earning over 12 million KRW monthly. For those earning significantly more, such as 20 million KRW, 30 million KRW or even over 100 million KRW, there’s no higher bracket. No matter how high the income, child support rarely exceeds 3 million KRW per month.”
