Jung Yu-mi was born in Nam-gu (now Suyeong-gu), Busan, South Korea. She is an only child in a single mother family, as her parents divorced when she was in elementary school.
She is often confused with actress Jeong Yu-mi, who is one year older, has the same name, and debuted around the same time. In fact, the actress even received congratulatory calls when the other Jung Yu-mi won an award at the Blue Dragon Films Awards. Due to these confusions, the actions even tried to change her name, but missed the timing since her name was already printed on a poster of her new drama at the time. She has since continued to use her real name.
Jung Yu-mi is a sports enthusiast who loves outdoor activities and sports, having participated in cycling, marathons, rock climbing, surfing, and scuba diving.
Career
Jung Yu-mi debuted in the entertainment industry in a chewing gum commercial in 2003. She then played a minor role in the 2003 film “Silmido”, marking her acting debut.
Afterwards, the actress continued to play minor characters in various works, including the K-dramas “Painter of the Wind”, “Dong Yi”, “A Thousand Days’ Promise”, “Rooftop Prince”, and the movies “The Doll Master”, “Innocent Steps”, “You’re My Pet”, and so on.
In 2013, Jung Yu-mi rose to stardom via the 2013 SBS drama “Wonderful Mama”, followed by leading roles in the series “Mother’s Garden” and movie “The Tunnel”. She also assumed a supporting role in the critically acclaimed historical series “Six Flying Dragons” in 2015, earning praise for her acting skill.

In 2018, Jung Yu-mi signed a contract with Japanese beauty brand DHC, but in 2019, the Korea-Japan trade dispute became an issue due to DHC’s anti-Korean behavior, leading to criticism directed towards Jung Yu-mi. As a result, she ceased modeling activities with the brand – an action which was applauded in Korea at the time.

In 2019, she denied dating H.O.T member Kangta, but eventually admitted to being in a relationship in 2020. There were even rumors of the two getting married, but SM has denied such news.
In 2024, Jung Yu-mi appeared on the viral historical series “Queen Woo”. However, the excessive nudity of the K-drama was often questioned by the public, leading to Jung Yu-mi also falling under scrutiny.
