“K-drama Legend Mother-In-Law” Late Kim Soo-mi’s Handwritten Petition Revealed Posthumously: A Heartfelt Plea of Innocence For Her Scandal

Kim Soo-mi passed away on October 25 at the age of 75. She was rushed to Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital in a state of cardiac arrest but tragically did not survive. Her cause of death was reported as cardiac arrest induced by hyperglycemic shock.
Following her passing, a book containing Kim Soo-mi’s personal diary entries will soon be released, allowing the public to continue connecting with her life. Titled I Plead Against Everything That Kills Me, the book compiles key excerpts from her diaries spanning from 1983, when she was in her 30s, until her death in 2024. Her intention was to share her philosophy and messages with struggling individuals and the youth, and this posthumous publication honors her wishes.

The book reveals Kim Soo-mi’s candid thoughts, penned during early mornings when she routinely wrote in her diary. Among the revelations is a particularly poignant letter she wrote to the court earlier this year. In January, Kim Soo-mi and her son Jung Myung-ho were sued by the processed food company Naphal Flower F&B, which sold products like kimchi and soy-marinated crabs, for violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes (embezzlement). The letter was addressed to the judge presiding over the case.
In her heartfelt plea, Kim Soo-mi wrote, “Honorable Judge, I earnestly ask that you understand our difficulties and help us resolve the management issues we face, so we can fulfill our social responsibilities as a healthy company.” Her words, laden with sincerity, evoke deep emotions and shed light on her struggles.
Earlier this year, Kim Soo-mi’s representatives clarified that her son Jung Myung-ho had been removed as CEO of Naphal Flower F&B since January and had no further association with the company. The posthumous revelation of her letter and her expressed emotions have further amplified the sorrow surrounding her passing.
