The debut of YG Entertainment’s new girl group BABYMONSTER is arousing divided reactions
After numerous delays and the unexpected absence of the most popular member Ahyeon, BABYMONSTER finally made their debut with the single “Batter Up”, a powerful song with YG’s traditional hip-hop genre, on November 27th.
However, “Batter Up” doesn’t seem to attract much attention from Korean people. Some netizens expressed disappointment that the debut song is old and not impressive. Its music video is said to have fancy and spectacular backgrounds that have been repeated in many music videos of YG senior artists, such as 2NE1 and BLACKPINK.
Moreover, some believe that BABYMONSTER doesn’t have a member who can immediately catch their eyes when watching the music video.
Other representative leading girl groups of the 4th generation, such as IVE, aespa, NewJeans, etc., successfully made their face known to the public because they have members with star qualities, such as Jang Won-young, Karina, Minji, etc. Meanwhile, BABYMONSTER is still struggling to make themselves stand out after losing ‘fan-attractor’ member Ahyeon.
In particular, netizens in theqoo commented:
- Their music video, stylings and song are all outdated
- BABYMONSTER doesn’t have any member who can immediately catch the eyes of viewers… I don’t know who is the center?
- I can’t find any member that stand out in this group…
- The group lacks a fan attractor…
- There’s nothing about this group that impresses me. Looking at their music video, dance and styles, I can’t figure out what concept they are pursuing
- It is such a regret that BABYMONSTER don’t have a member who can really stand out to the public
