On April 29, KATSEYE dropped a high-energy teaser for their upcoming track “Gnarly”. However, what caught attention wasn’t just the sound or visuals it was the alleged similarities to BLACKPINK and aespa that immediately sparked controversy.
In particular, netizens were quick to point out that the members’ outfits bore a striking resemblance to Jisoo’s solo MV “Earthquake” and Jennie’s styling in “Shut Down.” Moreover, specific teaser scenes were said to mimic aespa’s “Drama”, triggering heated debates across social media platforms.

Online users didn’t hold back, branding HYBE Labels as “copycat kings” for allegedly recycling aesthetics from top girl groups. Many referenced previous controversies, including Min Hee Jin’s accusation against chairman Bang Si-hyuk of copying NewJeans’ formula to launch ILLIT, while others brought up previously claim of SEVENTEEN’s teasers resembling those of aespa.

Still, not everyone agrees. Some fans defended KATSEYE, suggesting the bold girl crush concept is common in K-pop and that overlapping visuals and outfits are inevitable. One user noted, “We used to laugh when idols wore similar outfits. Now it’s fan wars every time they look remotely alike.”
As of now, HYBE Labels has remained silent, neither confirming nor denying the allegations. Many fans fear this controversy could cast a shadow over the group’s budding career. Formed in 2024, KATSEYE consists of 6 multinational members and is still carving out their identity in a competitive industry.
