Screenwriter Kim Eun-sook’s Five-Year Pursuit to Cast Gong Yoo in Hit Drama “Goblin” Revealed
Renowned screenwriter Kim Eun-sook, known as the queen of romantic comedies, reportedly spent five years trying to secure top actor Gong Yoo for her acclaimed drama Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (Goblin). This persistent effort finally paid off, leading to one of the most beloved K-drama collaborations in recent history.

Goblin, which aired on cable network tvN, quickly gained immense popularity for its unique storyline centered around the immortal goblin Kim Shin and his destined bride Ji Eun-tak. Gong Yoo’s compelling portrayal of Kim Shin was widely praised for its emotional depth and romantic appeal, solidifying the drama’s status as a cultural phenomenon.

According to sources close to the production, Kim Eun-sook faced repeated rejections from Gong Yoo over several years. The actor cited personal reservations about the pressure of starring in a major drama as his reason for initially declining the role. In an interview, Gong Yoo explained, “At some point, I started fearing dramas. Kim Eun-sook is an incredible figure to me. It wasn’t about rejecting her because I’m special—it was my own issue.”
Despite these challenges, Kim Eun-sook’s unwavering confidence in the project and heartfelt attempts to persuade Gong Yoo continued for five years. The turning point came when Gong Yoo finally accepted the role, sending a message that deeply moved the writer, “If you’re okay with a timid and fearful goblin like me, I’ll do it.”

The drama’s broadcast was a massive success, reaching a peak cable viewership rating of 20.5%. The so-called “Goblin Syndrome” swept across South Korea and international markets, marking a milestone in Korean television history.
Gong Yoo, born Gong Ji-chul in 1979, began his entertainment career as a model before debuting as an actor in School 4. Over the years, he built a strong reputation with notable roles in Biscuit Teacher and Star Candy, Coffee Prince, Silenced, and the blockbuster film Train to Busan. His role in Goblin further cemented his position as a leading figure in Korean drama and film.

Kim Eun-sook’s dedicated pursuit and Gong Yoo’s eventual commitment demonstrate the intricate efforts behind the scenes that shape successful television projects. Their collaboration on Goblin remains a testament to patience and passion in the entertainment industry.
