On the afternoon of February 16th, Kim Sae-ron was found deceased at her home in Seongsu-dong, Seongdong-gu, by an acquaintance. She was 24 years old. Police announced that no signs of forced entry or criminal activity were discovered and confirmed that she left no special will, suggesting that her death may be a result of an extreme choice.
Outstanding Talent and Achievements from a Young Age
Born in July 2000, Kim Sae-ron began her entertainment career as a child model, appearing on the cover of a magazine in 2001. She officially debuted as an actress in the 2009 Korea-France co-production film “A Brand New Life”, having secured the role after surpassing intense competition with a 1,000-to-1 ratio. Despite her young age, she was praised for her delicate portrayal of a girl abandoned by her parents and waiting for adoption.
“A Brand New Life” was invited to the official selection of the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, allowing Kim Sae-ron to walk the red carpet at just nine years old, making her the youngest Korean actress to enter Cannes. International newspapers highlighted her performance, bringing her global attention. In 2014, she played the role of Do-hee in the debut feature film of director Jung Joo Ri, “A Girl at My Door,” which was invited to the “Un Certain Regard” section at Cannes, making her the first Korean actress to attend the festival twice before turning ten.

In 2010, she starred in what became the most famous film in her filmography, “The Man from Nowhere.” She played the kidnapped girl So-mi, creating a deeply moving chemistry with Won Bin (Cha Tae-sik), who desperately fought to save her. “The Man from Nowhere” became a massive hit, attracting over six million viewers. With just two films, Kim Sae-ron solidified her status as one of Korea’s most promising young actresses.
Kim Sae-ron frequently portrayed “dark and unfortunate girls” who were marginalized and exploited by society, with various representative works. A common theme in her roles was that they involved kidnapping, murder, domestic violence, hostage situations, sexual violence, forced recruitment as comfort women, and disaster incidents—hardships even adult actors would struggle to endure.

Among the films she appeared in during her teenage years, excluding cameo roles and short films, six were rated “Restricted for Minors.” As a result, until she became an adult, Kim Sae-ron faced the ironic situation of being unable to watch most of the movies she starred in at the theater.
Kim Sae-ron once confessed in an interview that she made the final decision for all her roles. She stated, “There are many different people in the world. If there are bright kids, there are also dark ones. I believe someone has to take on those roles,” expressing that she never regretted her unique choice of projects, which set her apart from her peers. She also said, “Even when it’s difficult, the thrill of knowing that someone is watching my acting gives me the motivation to keep going.”

Kim Sae-ron was also active in dramas. Beginning with her role as the young version of Hwang Jung-eum’s character in the 2011 MBC drama “Listen to My Heart,” she continued to appear in various productions, including “Heaven’s Garden, Gombaeryeong,” “Fashion King,” “The Queen’s Classroom,” “The Great Shaman Ga Doo Shim,” and “Bloodhounds”, seamlessly transitioning between supporting and lead roles. While she did not have a massive hit in dramas comparable to her film success, she demonstrated a broad acting spectrum across sitcoms, romantic comedies, and historical dramas, skillfully balancing playfulness and maturity.
She also made occasional appearances in variety shows and worked as an MC, even showing unexpected chemistry and comedic interactions with veteran actors, old enough to be her father.
The Tragedy of Kim Sae-ron
Despite having an impressive career and stable acting skills that made it seem like she was on a smooth path, Kim Sae-ron’s fate took a drastic turn after the 2022 “drunk driving incident” as an adult. She was caught after causing an accident while driving under the influence at a city intersection and fleeing without taking proper measures. A blood test later revealed her blood alcohol concentration was around 0.2%, well above the license revocation threshold. The court sentenced her to a fine of 20 million KRW (approx 14,000 USD) in the first trial, and after she chose not to appeal, the sentence was finalized in 2023.

This incident became the decisive trigger that shattered Kim Sae-ron’s previously positive image as a “model former child actor” recognized for both her acting skills and character.
Although she took a hiatus for self-reflection, she had to drop out of multiple upcoming projects. At the same time, a flood of criticism from netizens, entertainment media, and YouTube content creators continued to target her. As a result, each attempt she made to return to the entertainment industry faced significant obstacles.
Even after making a difficult comeback, Kim Sae-ron continued to face public backlash. When news broke that she would resume activities after two years through the 2024 play “Dongchimi,” malicious comments from netizens and critical reports from the media poured in. Unable to withstand the pressure, she withdrew from the project within a day. She was set to appear in the music film “Guitar Man,” scheduled for release this May, but it has now become her final work.

As Kim Sae-ron tragically passed away, some are cautiously voicing self-reflection on the reckless personal attacks and witch hunts she endured during her lifetime.
Of course, drunk driving should never be romanticized or met with sympathy. Society’s awareness and criticism of drunk driving have significantly increased compared to the past. However, the relentless malicious comments, rumors, gossip, invasions of privacy, and humiliating news reports that Kim Sae-ron had to endure were excessive, even considering her mistakes.
From her days as a child actor, Kim Sae-ron was thrust into the spotlight at an early age, constantly exposed to public scrutiny and hateful comments. When she gained widespread attention for starring alongside top star Won Bin in “The Man from Nowhere,” she suffered emotional distress due to anti-fans flooding her website with malicious comments and insults about her appearance. At the time, Kim Sae-ron was only ten years old.
News Articles Worse than Malicious Comments
Kim Sae-ron was legally punished, acknowledged her wrongdoing, reflected on her actions, and tried to move forward. Yet, what she faced in return was nothing but cold ridicule and relentless public shaming. The level of attacks against her exceeded what any individual could mentally withstand.
- “Shameless mindset, bargaining for a lighter sentence due to financial struggles”
- “Kim Sae-ron enjoys controversy, addicted to social media attention”
- “Kim Sae-ron’s ‘nobody asked, nobody cares’ shameless sympathy-seeking”
- “Marriage clickbait, desperate for attention, endless attempts at erasing posts”
These were actual headlines from media reports directly targeting Kim Sae-ron. Even now, a simple search reveals an overwhelming number of sensationalist tabloid articles that are even more provocative than malicious comments from netizens.

Some so-called YouTubers posing as media outlets also actively joined the attack on Kim Sae-ron. One well-known entertainment YouTuber (said to be former reporter Lee Jin-ho) spread unverified claims that the late actress “went drinking with a famous BJ after her drunk driving accident” and that her “financial struggles were a lie, as she was spotted playing games at a pub after the incident.” These kinds of sensationalized, unconfirmed stories fueled the criticism against her. In the wake of her tragic passing, the violence of such one-sided media and YouTube-driven narratives is now being reexamined.

“I have never once regretted choosing acting as my career. I want to become an actress who conveys deeper emotions. When I become an adult and later reach middle age, I look forward to portraying different kinds of roles. One day, I dream of renting out a movie theater, inviting people I love, and screening all of my works in order, from my debut film onward, so I can look back on my journey.”
This was a dream Kim Sae-ron shared in an interview during her lifetime. Sadly, it has now become an unfulfilled wish.
Only after her passing are people belatedly expressing condolences, sympathy, and mourning—but she is no longer here to hear them.
