Rapper Koala Issues Handwritten Apology for Assault on Jessi Fan: “I Accept Full Responsibility”
On June 4, Koala posted a heartfelt letter on social media, beginning with, “I sincerely want to apologize to the victim and their family. I hoped to apologize in person, but I fully understand that they may not want to face me.” He acknowledged the trauma caused by the incident, adding, “There was absolutely no reason for them to experience what they did, and I deeply regret the pain I caused.”
Koala took responsibility for the altercation, stating that while he was not the one who initiated the violence, “the person who did was part of my group.” He admitted that poor judgment and miscommunication on his part escalated the situation, declaring, “That’s entirely my fault. I’ve accepted the consequences and continue to take responsibility.”
The incident in question occurred in August of the previous year in Apgujeong, Gangnam, where a Jessi fan was allegedly assaulted after asking for a photo. CCTV footage later showed Koala and another individual, referred to as “A,” physically attacking the victim. Although Jessi herself was questioned and cleared of involvement, the footage cast a spotlight on Koala’s behavior and reignited criticism online.
Jessi‘s agency clarified her limited association with Koala, noting that he had only worked with her on a few music projects including “Nunu Nana”, “Cold Blooded”, and “What Type of X.” They emphasized she had no personal connection to him. Koala’s alleged ties to the Korean-American gang “Korean Outlaws” further fueled the controversy, though no formal affiliations were confirmed.
Despite public backlash, Koala emphasized in his letter that the experience has led to personal growth. “I hear your voices, and I want you to know I’m working on becoming a better person,” he wrote. He confirmed that the case is now closed, and he plans to move forward with a renewed mindset.
The other suspect, “A,” remains wanted internationally and is currently on Interpol’s list. Koala has been referred to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office on assault charges.
