“Fans Might Turn Away”: Kyuhyun’s Pre-Warning Resurfaces After “The Devil’s Plan 2” Fallout
On May 20, the final episode of Netflix’s variety show “The Devil’s Plan Death Room” (The Devil’s Plan Season 2) was released. The series is a survival competition where players from various professional backgrounds live together for seven days to determine the ultimate strategist. This season featured notable figures like professional Go player Lee Sedol, veteran idol Kyuhyun, former JTBC announcer Kang Ji-young and actress Yoon So-hee.
After the final episode aired, online discussions ignited. Kyuhyun became the target of criticism due to his actions and remarks during the show. His emotional responses and attitude in certain conversations sparked controversy.
During the elimination of Lee Sedol and Justin H. Min, who were part of a minority alliance, Kang Ji-young remarked, “You didn’t show any emotion when sending off Sedol, so why act righteous now?” Kyuhyun retorted, “That was their choice—they wanted to go alone. Is this the same?” His sharp tone led some viewers to label him selfish, expressing discomfort with his attitude.
While Kyuhyun’s defense of Jung Hyun-gyu in the later episodes was interpreted by some as a show of justice, others criticized the inconsistency, noting he seemed emotionally reactive only toward specific individuals.
In light of this, Kyuhyun’s comments from the press conference are being revisited. At the event held on April 29, he admitted, “I think some fans might turn away after watching this.” Kang Ji-young added “I see Kyuhyun in a new light. I was a fan, but I’ll refrain from saying more” which some viewers now view as a telling foreshadowing.
As the controversy intensified, Kyuhyun addressed the issue through his fan communication platform. He stated, “Not everything could be shown in the broadcast. There are many regrets, but some parts were beyond the production team’s or my control.” He added, “Among the cast, we’re very close and understand each other well. I hope you can see it in a good light.”
Kyuhyun has mentioned the possibility of sharing further comments on his personal channel, leaving fans and viewers alike curious about his next move.
