Lee Hyori IVF comment controversy

Lee Hyori Faces Intense Backlash Over Past IVF Comment: Criticism and Support Collide

A recent post on an online community titled “If Lee Hyori Naturally Has a Child” drew widespread attention. The post referenced Lee Hyori’s appearance on the MBC Every1 variety show “Tteokbokki Brothers” in May 2022, where she openly shared her thoughts on having children.

On the show, Lee stated, “I don’t want to go as far as IVF. I don’t want to rely on medical intervention.” She added, “If it happens naturally, I’d be extremely grateful and raise the child with love. I know someone who had their first child at 58, so that gives me courage.”

She also expressed a shift in perspective, saying, “I want to have a child because I want to experience the love and dedication that mothers have. But I’ve also come to realize that true love isn’t something you can only experience through having your own child. I want to live like a mother to everyone, even if I never have a child of my own.”

These comments have recently resurfaced and reignited discussion online. Some netizens criticized the remarks, saying, “This could hurt those who are struggling with IVF,” and, “It’s disrespectful to people enduring pain while trying to conceive.” Others came to her defense, arguing, “She didn’t say anything negative about IVF,” and, “It’s not like she told people not to do it.”

The debate has intensified, with over 1,200 comments posted on articles covering the issue. Unfortunately, this has also led to a surge of malicious comments directed at Lee Hyori.

However, Lee never condemned IVF itself nor tried to impose her views on others. She simply shared her personal beliefs in a careful and respectful way. This incident echoes similar controversies, such as the backlash against singer Lim Young-woong’s “Im-mwoyo” comment, where a celebrity’s words were exaggerated or misinterpreted. Actors Jin Tae-hyun and Park Si-eun also faced similar reactions when they mentioned IVF while discussing plans to have a child.

In a social climate that often refuses to accept differing opinions, there is an urgent need for a culture that respects personal choices and refrains from spreading hateful comments.
