Male Korean YouTuber Sentenced to Prison after Assaulting Elderly Taxi Driver

Recently, the Jeonju District Court’s Jeongeup branch sentenced a Korean male YouTuber in his 20s to 2 years and 6 months in prison for a series of crimes, including assault, special assault, fraud, and inflicting injury.
Accordingly, between November 2023 and April 2024, the YouTuber, identified only as “A”, caused injuries to customers at restaurants and bars in Jeonju and Gwangju by throwing broken glass and swinging metal chairs. He was also convicted of fraudulently obtaining 12.5 million KRW (approx. $9,000 USD) from an acquaintance and failing to pay a caregiver fee of around 600,000 KRW after using the service.
More notably, “A” gained notoriety after assaulting an elderly taxi driver near the Jeonju Bus Terminal in February last year — an incident that drew intense public outrage. Shockingly, he later used the assault to promote his YouTube channel, branding himself with keywords like “Taxi Driver Assault” and “Tattooed Assaulter” to boost his subscriber count.
Despite acknowledging his crimes and reaching settlements with some victims, the court ruled that the serious nature of repeated violent offenses and the use of dangerous objects left no option but a prison sentence. “The defendant’s repeated offenses and blatant disregard for social order necessitate a prison term,” the court stated.
