Moon Chae-won’s SNL Korea Skit Sparks Outrage: “Is This a Japanese Variety Show?”

Top actress Moon Chae-won recently guest-starred on SNL Korea, but what was meant to be a comedic appearance has now sparked intense public backlash.
In the skit, Moon’s character is alone in a room with her friend. She suddenly asks him to lie down, caresses his bare legs, and at one point, vigorously rubs her foot over his lower body. While the intention was clearly comedic and in line with SNL Korea‘s signature risqué humor, the scene crossed a line for many viewers.

Netizens were quick to express their discomfort.

Comments on theqoo:
- Male Ilbe-style writers
- Are they crazy? Why are they doing that? Is it supposed to be funny?
- Wow, I’m seriously so shocked. Why is Moon Chae-won doing something like this??? Is there no script screening?? She or Kim Won-hoon’s agency should seriously raise an issue with that script.
- Why would you do something that garbage…
- What did I just watch?
Calls for the show to be taken off the air or for the writers to be held accountable are also growing louder. Many feel the comedic style that once defined SNL Korea has not evolved with the times and fails to reflect current cultural sensitivities.

This isn’t the first time SNL Korea has been criticized for its borderline inappropriate humor.
Past seasons have also come under fire for lowbrow jokes and insensitive portrayals, but the backlash surrounding Moon Chae-won known for her graceful and elegant image has reignited the debate about where the line is between edgy and offensive in comedy.
