“My Demon” Achieves Popularity & Global Fans Despite Falling Behind Rival Drama In Terms Of Ratings

Starring Song Kang and Kim Yoo-jung, “My Demon” is performing excellently overseas despite its poor ratings in Korea

Releasing its first episode on November 24th, SBS’s “My Demon” is a fantasy romcom about the contract marriage between devilish heiress Do Do-hee (Kim Yoo-jung) and demon Jung Goo-won (Song Kang), who temporarily loses his power. Starting with a viewership of 4.5% in episode 1, the drama has maintained a stable performance in the 4% range throughout 8 episodes.

In the meantime, the rating of MBC’s “The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract”, which premiered on the same day as “My Demon”, is on an upward trend. Recording 5.6% in the first episode, its rating increased steadily through each episode and is on the verge of surpassing 10%. Currently, the drama’s highest rating peak is 9.6%.

In terms of ratings, “The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract” results are twice as high as that of “My Demon”. However, “My Demon” is leading in popularity. In particular, the SBS drama has topped the buzzworthy rankings of TV & TV-OTT dramas for two consecutive weeks, while its lead actors Song Kang and Kim Yoo-jung also ranked 1st and 2nd among drama casts. 

While “The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract” is only available on Korean OTT platforms Wavve and U+ Mobiletv, “My Demon” is not only released on Wavve but also shown simultaneously on the global OTT platform Netflix, making it easier for global viewers to approach it. 

According to Netflix Global Top 10 chart on December 20th, “My Demon” ranked 2nd in the non-English speaking TV series category with high views and viewing times. Moreover, the global popularity of “My Demon” does not depend on a particular area. Apart from Korea, the drama has also entered Today’s Top 10 chart in various countries, such as Argentina, Brazil, the US, France, Germany, Italy, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam, etc.

It seems that “My Demon” was able to captivate global viewers thanks to the visual chemistry of Kim Yoo-jung and Song Kang. Nicknamed “Son of Netflix”, Song Kang has starred in various popular series, such as “Love Alarm” series, “Sweet Home” series, “Navillera”, “Nevertheless”, etc. Attracting viewers on Netflix with the casting of Song Kang, “My Demon” successfully earned a large amount of solid fans.

Normally, a drama will face its turning point when reaching episode 8. In episode 8 of “My Demon”, Goo-won and Do Do-hee also confirmed their feelings for each other amid a crisis.
