This Light Stick Appeared at the Impeachment Rally “What’s Its Identity?”

This unexpected phenomenon arose as large-scale protests, sparked by the impeachment motion against the president, saw lightsticks replacing traditional LED candles. At the December 7 protest in Yeouido, Seoul, many women in their 20s and 30s carried colorful idol lightsticks instead of candles.

With a second protest planned for the weekend following the impeachment’s rejection, demand for lightsticks has surged nationwide. However, since lightsticks are typically produced in limited quantities according to fandom size, most are out of stock. This shortage has driven people to seek second-hand or even counterfeit versions. On December 9, Danggeun Market listings for idol lightsticks were bustling across Seoul.

NCT lightstick

Among the many K-pop groups, NCT‘s lightstick has become the most sought-after. Its strong brightness and cubic design make it ideal for attaching protest slogans like “Impeach” and “Resign”. Customization options also appeal to individuals wanting to express their unique protest style. Epik High’s lightstick is another favorite due to its design resembling a middle finger, perfectly matching the sentiment of the protests.

Second-hand prices for NCT’s lightstick hover around 40,000 KRW, while those of BLACKPINK, EXO, Sung Si-kyung, BIGBANG and SHINee vary between 20,000 and 40,000 KRW depending on condition, battery life, and original packaging. Some posts even offer free rentals for protest purposes, requiring only a 50,000 KRW deposit.

One music industry insider commented, “Not even merchandise planners could have imagined lightsticks being used in protests like this. It’s a clear reflection of the MZ generation’s aversion to solemnity.” The insider added, “NCT’s lightstick, nicknamed ‘pork cutlet hammer’ or ‘Thor’s hammer’ by fans, being used this way is truly ironic.”

Meanwhile, the protest atmosphere was electrified with songs like BIGBANG G-Dragon’s “Crooked” and Rosé’s “APT.”, while tracks from SHINee, Girls’ Generation, BTS, SEVENTEEN and aespa turned the event into what felt like a concert.
