4th gen girl group NewJeans is still hitting new career highs
The 2023 MAMA Awards recently wrapped up. All four Daesang winners are from HYBE, including BTS, SEVENTEEN, and NewJeans.
NewJeans won big by bagging two Daesangs: Artist of the Year and Song of the Year – Ditto. Plus, they also won Best Female Group and Best Dance Performance Female Group.
NewJeans is the third girl group, following Girls’ Generation and 2NE1, to win two Daesangs in the same MAMA season. Looking back at 2023, NewJeans released a bunch of hits. “Ditto” had them owning Korea with an impressive Perfect All-Kill streak.
NewJeans also made history by landing on Billboard Hot 100 just three months after debut. So, NewJeans and “Ditto” winning MAMA’s Daesang wasn’t a shocker.
Although there are mixed opinions about their skills, no one can deny NewJeans’ stardom. After shaking things up at the 2023 BBMAs and delivering captivating performances, NewJeans won the Artist of the Year category at MAMA, leaving K-pop fans in awe.
With two big wins, NewJeans is now the top 4th-gen girl group. Also, they achieved something even BLACKPINK didn’t manage—winning “double Daesang” in their debut year.
Looking back at BLACKPINK’s stellar career, there’s just one thing missing: a Daesang trophy. Even though they didn’t hit the pinnacle of domestic awards, BLACKPINK remains the global face of K-pop. They owned Coachella, VMAs, racked up concert revenue milestones, and had two epic World Tours.
For BLACKPINK fans, the seven-year journey is their ultimate source of pride. Daesang or not, it doesn’t matter when you think about the group’s global success.
