On June 15, 2000, the K-pop world was struck with grief as Kim Hwan-sung, the beloved youngest member of NRG, passed away tragically at the tender age of 19. Today marks the 25th anniversary of his untimely death, a loss that continues to be deeply mourned by fans and fellow artists alike.
Kim Hwan-sung was initially hospitalized due to what appeared to be a common cold. However, his condition quickly deteriorated as he developed a high fever and severe respiratory distress. Within just three days, he fell into a coma and was declared brain-dead shortly after. The illness was later identified as an acute viral respiratory infection, but the exact virus responsible was never determined.

His sudden passing came at a time when he was actively promoting with NRG, one of the most prominent early K-pop groups who had garnered massive popularity in both Korea and China. As one of the original Hallyu stars, NRG paved the way for many idol groups that followed.
Having debuted in 1996 under the co-ed group Kkebi Kkebi and re-debuted in 1997 as part of NRG, Kim quickly captured hearts with his youthful energy and bright presence. He wasn’t just the youngest member but also the emotional core of the team.

The loss was deeply felt within the group, and NRG eventually continued as a quartet. Yet, Kim’s memory has never been forgotten. Member Noh Yoo-min has faithfully commemorated his late friend every year. In a touching post last year, Noh wrote at midnight on June 15, “Today is the anniversary of our eternal NRG member and my friend, Kim Hwan-sung.”
The male idol’s legacy also lives on through fans who continue to share old videos, photos, and tributes, and through fellow idols who often cite NRG as an early inspiration. Though his time in the spotlight was brief, Kim Hwan-sung left an indelible mark on K-pop history.
