On March 24, actor Park Bo Gum sat down for an interview in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul to discuss his role in Netflix’s series “When Life Gives You Tangerines”, addressing recent discussions around his reduced screen time and his deep affection for the character he portrayed.

In the drama, which unfolds over four acts and follows the life of Ae Sun and her devoted lover Yang Gwan Sik, Park Bo Gum plays the younger version of Gwan Sik a warm-hearted and steadfast man from Jeju Island.

Park Bo Gum shared his love for the series, “I’ve always been a fan of writer Lim Sang Choon and was thrilled to work with director Kim Won Seok and such amazing colleagues. Just having this work in my filmography makes me thankful. I’m truly happy to recommend this drama to others.”

He talked about his character, “The more I read the script, the more I realized how admirable Gwan Sik was. Playing him made me want to become someone like him. He’s sincere, he gives his all. I think that’s his biggest strength.”

Showing his admiration for the character, Park Bo Gum added, “If I had a daughter, I’d tell her to meet someone like Gwan Sik. I also want to be someone that other parents could trust with their child not just in love, but even at work. I hope people who work with ‘Park Bo Gum’ would say he’s a reliable person who does his job well.

On Screen Time Reduction: “Everyone in This Drama Is a Main Character”

As Act 3 shifted focus to the daughter character Geum Myeong (played by IU), viewers noted that Park Bo Gum’s screen time dropped sharply, sparking some disappointment online.

When asked about it, Park Bo Gum responded warmly, “I actually appear more in Act 4 compared to Act 3,” he shared. “I believe every character in this drama is a protagonist in their own way. Just having this project in my filmography is deeply meaningful. Like I said earlier, I hope we all of us will be remembered fondly in many people’s hearts. I am, in a way, also Park Hae Joon (who plays the older Gwan Sik).

As fans await the release of the final act, Park Bo Gum remains proud of his role and the message the drama delivers.
