On Dec 28th, Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency Commissioner Kim Hee-jung, who directed the investigation into the drug allegations against the late Lee Sun-kyun, met reporters to address the issues.
Commissioner Kim said, “It’s very regrettable that the deceased passed away. I offer deep condolences to the bereaved family.” However, Commissioner Kim drew a line on the suspicions raised, such as “unreasonable investigation” and “leaking internal investigation information”.
He emphasized, “There was no public attendance request or leakage of investigation information as raised by some. The investigation proceeded based on specific tip-offs and evidence, following legal procedures.”
Commissioner Kim explained, “During the first investigation, the deceased expressed an intention to make a statement later, so no specific investigation took place. After securing additional evidence following the second investigation, we conducted the third investigation on Dec 23rd. During the (third) investigation, the defender requested to conduct the victim investigation in the blackmail case together to conclude it at once. The investigation was conducted for a long time in consideration of hearing the deceased’s statement sufficiently.”
He added, “The late-night investigation was conducted with the participation of the defender, with the deceased’s consent. In all processes related to this case, including investigation, seizure and forensic procedures, the defender participated, and proper procedures were followed, such as making footage of statements.”
On the same day, Police Commissioner Yoon Hee-geun also expressed his position regarding the death of actor Lee Sun-kyun. When asked by reporters about the criticism that the police conducted an unreasonable investigation, Commissioner Yoon responded, “I don’t agree that the police investigation was wrong, leading to such results.” However, he added, “I personally liked Mr. Lee (Lee Sun-kyun), so I was saddened and surprised.”
Commissioner Yoon also addressed the police’s refusal to the request for a closed investigation in the third summons requested by Lee Sun-kyun’s lawyer. 4 days before Lee Sun-kyun’s death, he had requested a closed investigation through his lawyer for the final investigation, but it was revealed that the police broke investigation disclosure rules and rejected the request.
Accordingly, Commissioner Yoon said, “At that time, if such an investigation had been conducted privately, would you have accepted it?”
